Vegan Drinks XXI: We Raised $1,450 for Animals in Haiti!

January 30, 2010 12:03am
Vegan Drinks NYC: January 28, 2010

"Show me what Vegan Drinks looks like!" "This is what Vegan Drinks looks like!" (More photos by Matthew Mitchell and Jason Das available on Flickr.)

Thank you, New York City. On Thursday, January 28th, in a little over two hours, we sold $1,450 worth of sweet and savory treats at our Vegan Bake Sale for Haiti! Not too shabby for a little bake sale in the corner of a bar on a frigid winter night. Sodopreca and Animal Relief Coalition for Haiti (ARCH) will receive their checks soon!

Extra special, cherry-on-top thanks to those of you who baked! We had the most fantastic line-up of treats -- Hostess-style cupcakes, personal pizzas, gourmet chocolates (thanks, Lauren at Sweet Compassion), spinach pies, brownies and cookies of all sorts, doggy- and heart-shaped gingerbread cookies (courtesy of Patti at Baked Ideas), more cupcakes (thanks to everyone who made cupcakes and Allison at Minor Treat) and even bagels!

This week's Vegan Drinks marked our 21st event in NYC. (Vegan Drinks is now in 19 cities! Welcome, Nashville!) To celebrate, we gave away Sambazon, Alex Jamieson's new book, Living Vegan for Dummies, and a couple of sets of the "Cookin' with My Crawdaddy" vegan cajun cookzines. (Thanks for the donations, everyone!) DJ Lil Ray kept the standing-room-only crowd happy with the good tunes as everyone patiently waited for their chance to order a drink or devour an apple cider donut.

Bring Small Bills! Vegan Bake Sale for Haiti at Vegan Drinks NYC on Thursday, January 28!

January 27, 2010 11:55am
We're hosting a vegan bake sale for Haiti at this week's Vegan Drinks NYC on Thursday, January 28 from 7:00pm to 9:00pm at Angels & Kings bar! More than 30 talented bakers want to sell you amazing sweet and savory baked treats. Please come with small bills and big to-go containers and buy, buy, buy! All proceeds will be donated to Animal Relief Coalition for Haiti (ARCH) and the Dominican animal rescue group Sodopreca. Angels & Kings will also be donating a portion of its sales to the Haiti relief effort.

This month's Vegan Drinks marks our 21st event! DJ Lil Ray will be present to rock your world. Sambazon is bringing some of their açaí juice by for drink specials and giveaways. And, we'll give an autographed copy of Alex Jamieson's new book, Living Vegan for Dummies, to one very lucky winner. (Thanks, Sambazon and Alex!)

As always, the drinks are cheap ($3 domestics, $4 imports and $1 off well drinks) and the crowd is cool.

We'll turn down the music around 8pm and encourage people to promote themselves, their groups and/or causes for 30 seconds. If you represent a veg*n or animal rights group, come prepared with your (very short!) spiel and literature.

Check out our map of restaurants near Angels & Kings where you can grab a bite after the event. And if you haven't already, link up with Vegan Drinks on Facebook and MySpace.

A LOT of folks bundled up and headed to Thursday, December 17th's Vegan Drinks at Angels & Kings Bar. If you were busy typing a final exam or avoiding awkward holiday office party conversations or simply stuck at work, then you missed one of the biggest Vegan Drinks to-date. The 20th Vegan Drinks in NYC featured vegan nog and rum cocktails, DJ Lil Ray's selections on the sound system, and giveaways from V-Spot, Compassionate Confections, Evolve Accessories and Rational Animal, as well as books from Melanie Joy and Isa Chandra Moskowitz & Terry Hope Romero.

The good people got up and made their "Shout Outs", too. Matt from Mercy For Animals made a general call for volunteers. Joyce & Jenny from Pets for Life NYC reminded the crowd about all of the good work they do. Brian introduced us to the Ulster County SPCA. Beth spoke about the Healthy Planet mission. Kate explained where to learn more about her jewelry line, Evolve Accessories. Lauren told everyone how to get more truffles from Compassionate Confections. Dawne announced that she is opening The Good Pantry, a vegan grocery store(!), in NYC soon-ish (Update: Dawne is planning to start a pilot version of the store inside the V-Spot). And, Andreas needs a new vegan neighbor to fill the vacant apartment in his all-vegan apartment building in Manhattan.

If you would like to get in touch with any of the folks mentioned above, please email info@vegandrinks.org.

Extra special thanks to Jesse the Bartender, Jesse the Raffle Ticket Giver, and Matthew the Photographer.

The SuperVegan Round-up, December 16: Rambunctious octopus, Vegan Drinks, FS donations, Paterson on AR, Teany's comeback, ice cream ON FIRE, and much more

December 16, 2009 11:30pm
Someone poke this man with a knife.

Someone poke this man with a knife.

  • Vegan Drinks is TOMORROW. Free stuff, and booze, and vegans, and what else could you want for a Thursday night?
  • Teany's coming back, y'all! The teahouse/maker of delicious baked goods and light meals just began rebuilding the space, more than six months after a fire put them out of business. Pleasepleaseplease, chicken salad melt, come back!!
  • Feeling generous? Or, hey, feeling like a greedy, selfish scumbag? 'Til the end of the year, your donations to Farm Sanctuary will be matched TIMES TWO by some secret and super generous donor for the rest of '09. Easy math: $1 for you = $3 for a cuddly lamb or frisky pig. So if you were planning to give nothing because you thought $20 wasn't good enough (which it totally is!), now you're giving $60, and that's, what? Food for a family of four (goats) for a week or two, right?
  • OK, guys, more easy math: Buy one of Isa's cookbooks and she will donate ALL the proceeds to Out to Pasture Animal Sanctuary. Christmas shopping: done.
  • Governor Paterson spoke at an NYLHV VIP reception held in his honor. Take a looksee at Ecorazzi's interview with him.
  • So there's an octopus...snatching a coconut? I don't know. I mean, I've never seen an octopus run like that.
  • One of us (Patrick? Maybe?) ate vegan fried ice cream at Soy and Sake. Devourable or detestable? YOU DECIDE. (I've already decided that every system in my body would shut down if I got near that thing.)
  • A Ringling Brothers employee outted those elephant-abusing clowns, the Washington Post reported.
  • Garden blend mock meat from Gardein appeared at Chipotle in Chelsea! Vegan mainstreaming, YES.

Vegan Drinks XIX: The Recap

November 21, 2009 6:45pm

The November 19th installment of Vegan Drinks featured a solid lineup. Fresh faces mixed with the very familiar ones. DJ Lil Ray kept the crowd in steady beats. Angels & Kings bartender Jesse replenished drinks effortlessly. And, David from Farm Sanctuary helped us all to adopt turkeys, pigs and cows just in time for the start of the winter holiday season. We owe a special thanks to our friends who donated Farm Sanctuary memberships and adoptions for us to give away to three lucky folks in the crowd.

The people lined up to spread their messages during "Shout Outs." David announced a plethora of upcoming Farm Sanctuary events. Joyce introduced us to Pets for Life NYC. Kneel revealed that Vegetable Slut has a new Web site and vegan-friendly designs for sale. Abby made an appeal for one of the dogs on Friday's euthanasia list at Animal Care & Control and offered her assistance to anyone who could foster the dog. We plugged Isa Chandra Moskowitz's and Terry Hope Romero's new cookbook, Vegan Cookies Invade Your Cookie Jar, which will get the book release party treatment at MooShoes this Tuesday, November 24th, at 7pm. (Free cookies and sandwiches, y'all!) And, the über talented Mascha returned to Vegan Drinks with her completed photo project, VEGAN NY, which was projected on one of the bar's walls.

Vegan Drinks: It Happened Again

September 27, 2009 7:54pm
vegandrinks.org

NYC vegans flocked to Angels & Kings Bar this past Thursday night like it was their birthright. New faces mixed well with the more seasoned ones. An enterprising gent even brought his own soy milk to the bar so he could down vegan White Russians like a pro all night long.

The usual suspects and then some got up to spread their messages during "Shout Outs." Robyn reminded everyone to register for Farm Sanctuary's Walk for Farm Animals* (Sunday, October 4th). Susan announced NYC Vegan EatUp events, including the Daiya Cheese Crawl on October 2nd. Jessica updated the crowd on the availability of spectator tickets and chef spots at September's Veggie Conquest (secret ingredient: squash). David of Farm Sanctuary listed a litany of events sponsored by his organization in coming weeks, including October 14th's "Farm Animals and the Law" at NYU. And, last but not least, Jeff, founder of Veg Social NJ, announced that he recently moved to NYC and started a Veg Social NYC chapter. The next two potlucks will be held October 17th on the Lower East Side and November 5th in Brooklyn Heights. Follow both chapters on Facebook and email VegSocialNYC@gmail.com to get on its mailing list!

If you would like to get in touch with any of the folks mentioned above, please email info@vegandrinks.org.
