NYC vegans flocked to Angels & Kings Bar this past Thursday night like it was their birthright. New faces mixed well with the more seasoned ones. An enterprising gent even brought his own soy milk to the bar so he could down vegan White Russians like a pro all night long.

The usual suspects and then some got up to spread their messages during "Shout Outs." Robyn reminded everyone to register for Farm Sanctuary's Walk for Farm Animals* (Sunday, October 4th). Susan announced NYC Vegan EatUp events, including the Daiya Cheese Crawl on October 2nd. Jessica updated the crowd on the availability of spectator tickets and chef spots at September's Veggie Conquest (secret ingredient: squash). David of Farm Sanctuary listed a litany of events sponsored by his organization in coming weeks, including October 14th's "Farm Animals and the Law" at NYU. And, last but not least, Jeff, founder of Veg Social NJ, announced that he recently moved to NYC and started a Veg Social NYC chapter. The next two potlucks will be held October 17th on the Lower East Side and November 5th in Brooklyn Heights. The latest gossip at Vegan Drinks HQ is that Canada may soon be home to the first Vegan Drinks event outside of the U.S. of A. As soon as we get more details, we will post them here. (Note: The first Canadian Vegan Drinks is likely to take place in the city where "21 Jump Street" was filmed. You don't need to Wiki that, do you?)

David from Farm Sanctuary reminded the room to register for Sunday, October 4th's Walk for Farm Animals fundraiser in Central Park. Michelle promoted the work of the great folks at Catskills Animal Sanctuary. Jessica announced the next Veggie Conquest, scheduled for September 26th. Kneel displayed his sassy buttons and thanked everyone who attended the Rock for Farm Animals fundraiser. An animal rights activist from New Zealand (we didn't get your name, email us if you read this!) introduced herself to the crowd. And, Cinematographer Tim Gorski plugged the new Sea Shepherd documentary, At the Edge of the World.

Did your dinner consist only of marshmallows and beer on Thursday night?  Well, mine did. Sorta. I also feasted on Sweet and Sara Rocky Road Bark and Smores. I suppose I drank a few gin and tonics, too. (Sorry, Mom.)

I wasn't alone. NYC's finest vegans and the vegan-curious gathered for the 15th Vegan Drinks at Angels & Kings bar. We sampled treats from Sweet and Sara throughout the evening. We drank fancy cocktails and cheap beer and ice cold water. Some of us were spotted roasting marshmallows above the votive candles scattered around the room. It's true, those marshmallows melt!

We made new friends, some of whom plugged their projects during the Shout Outs portion of the evening: Jessica announced the upcoming Veggie Conquest on August 22nd, Edita talked about the Tony Avella fundraiser on August 5th, Alice asked for help with Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) in Crown Heights, Lydia represented the brand new Mercy For Animals NYC office and made the call for painters and IKEA furniture assemblers to lend a hand, and Matthew (our unofficially official photographer) has some friends getting married soon who are looking for bakers to help them produce a critical mass of vegan cupcakes.  If you want to get in touch with any of the folks listed herein, email info@vegandrinks.org and we'll hook you guys up.  Platonically, of course.

Can you believe we've been doing Vegan Drinks for a full year now?! The event continues to be completely awesome here in New York City, and has now propagated to eleven twelve other cities (Baltimore, Boston, Cleveland, Central Iowa, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Philadelphia, Salt Lake City, San Francisco, Twin Cities, Washington, DC, and just added: Northampton, MA).

Nothing pleases Vegan Drinks founder Deborah Diamant more than simultaneous consumption of cake and beer, so help us celebrate by bringing some delicious homemade (or, hell, I'll take store-bought, too) goodies.
