If you spend any amount of time in New York City, you’ll notice that virtually every deli, bodega, and independent bookstore seems to have at least one cat in residence. You probably worry about them, and may even have “rescued” one or two. There’s a piece in the Times today about these littlest employees, who are generally retained for their ability to scare rodents away. Having cats in areas where food is prepared is illegal for “health” reasons, but consensus seems to be that they help more than they hurt. Definitely worth a read if you’re curious about bodega cats, and also check out Working Class Cats, a blog dedicated to their stories.
(For the record, the “important” local news you should be following is all about the Carriage Horse Ban–see what League of Humane Voters and
Friends of Animals have to say about it.)
