MFA will be meeting at the parade’s starting point on the corner of 36th and 5th Ave. at 11am for a complementary bagel breakfast, followed by the march from noon until about 3pm, when the parade ends at Christopher and Greenwich Streets, blocks from the historic Stonewall Inn.

Don’t have any MFA gear to sport? Participants wil be given MFA t-shirts, as well as banners, rainbow flags, whistles and leaflets to be passed out during the march. Feeling classy? How about generous? If so, then you’ll want to check out Sea Shepherd‘s upcoming benefit art show, Waves of Change, on Thursday, June 27th at the Hasted Kraeutler Gallery in Manhattan from 7pm until 11pm. For those who are unfamiliar, Sea Shepherd is a marine conservation organization know for their direct action approach to preserving ocean life, much of which has been documented in the Animal Planet program Whale Wars.

The art show will feature original pieces (many of which are marine-themed, this one is especially excellent), a silent auction, Sea Shepherd merchandise for sale, food and wine from Querciabella and additional food from Chickpea and Olive, featuring Treeline Cheese. Tickets are $20, making this a perfect, affordable excuse to bust out that little black dress or snazzy tie! If you can’t make it, Sea Shepherd always happily accepts donations.

Registration is $75 ($25 for students) until August 1st, when the price jumps to $95 ($35 for students). Financial assistance is available to help offset the cost for those who need it. There’s an optional evening reception after the conference, which can be attended for an extra $30. Additionally, the reception is open to those who don’t attend the conference if you can’t commit to a full day of events but still want to meet the speakers and mingle with like-minded people.

This event is so important and having big turnout is key—for the first time in NYC history, animals are a part of the political conversation, as horse drawn carriages and animal shelter reform are big issues in the NYC Mayor’s race.

Continuing our dump on North Carolina day here at SuperVegan, we’re pleased that, to quote the AP, “possums can’t be dropped any more in illuminated balls on New Year’s Eve in Brasstown, North Carolina.“

PETA had sued the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission, which issues the permit for the event, saying it’s illegal and cruel.

“Citizens are prohibited from capturing and using wild animals for pets or amusement,” Judge Fred Morrison wrote in his ruling. The commission “had no authority to issue any permit to Logan for the unlawful public display of a native wild animal” at the drop, Morrison wrote.

Thanks for this one, PETA!

And lest you think this is some olde-timey tradition, naw, Clay’s Corner has only been doing this since the 1990s. Apparently the inspiration was a suggestion that “since the possum is Brasstown’s mascot of sorts, the town should have a live animal drop similar to the dropping of the ball in Times Square”. Of course. Totally makes sense. Why, it’s even a “non-alcoholic family event … We bring the possum to start the event and then the blessing and then we bring out the queens of the last ten years and show them off…and the church singing of songs and then the drop.” Sounds just like what goes down at Times Square every year.

(I learned via Wikipedia that they do an event in Tallapoosa, Georgia also called a Possum Drop, but as that event’s website loudly states, “We Do Not Use A Live Opossum. It Is Stuffed.” I’m not sure if that means a fake possum or a taxidermied one, and, well, maybe I don’t really want to know.)

Watch it with a friend or family member who eats turkey, and try not to physically attack them if they tell you “it’s not so bad”.

Did you know that animal rights groups became the “number one domestic terrorism threat” in this country?

I didn’t, until I read an interview with journalist and author Will Potter on the Animal Legal Defense Fund website.

Potter, “is an award-winning independent journalist based in Washington, D.C., who focuses on ‘eco-terrorism,’ the animal rights and environmental movements, and civil liberties post-9/11. His work has appeared in the Chicago Tribune, the Huffington Post, and the Vermont Law Review.” After getting arrested for leafletting, threatened by the FBI, and then testifying before Congress, he became “obsessed” with finding out how this terrifying reality came to be.

Drawing comparisons to the “Red Scare” era, Potter’s book, Green Is The New Red: An Insider’s Account of a Social Movement Under Siege is, “a thrilling memoir that contextualizes the federal Animal Enterprise Terrorism Act (AETA).” AETA, he explains, was created to expand on the Animal Enterprise Protection Act (AEPA), which was deemed “inadequate in going after radical groups.”

The article also goes on to discuss the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC), which might be even more scary; “a secretive organization that allows corporations to literally write bills that have been introduced around the country—with lawmakers having no idea that they were actually drafted by corporations themselves”, and provides a link to Potter’s Congressional testimony. I need a hug!

Where I come from, MFA stands for Master of Fine Arts, but those are just really expensive pieces of paper that don’t do a whole lot. A better use of the acronym is Mercy For Animals because they do awesome things like fight for farmed animals and against the cruelty they are subjected to. Not the other way around. Do you know about this organization? I bet you didn’t know they were this cute.

On Saturday, June 2nd, I was lucky enough to attend a MFA event called Justice For All: A Night For Creatures Big And Small. This was a $500 per VIP ticket cocktail party in the West Hollywood Hills. Pretty swank. Hillary Swank was not there, but other celebrities were, like honoree Emily Deschanel and her Bones co-star Michaela Conlin, Jackass Steve-O and that Skinny Bitch Rory Freedman. The host, Freeway The Dog, and his house were incredible and the bar was not only open, but staffed with swoon-worthy ‘tenders.

The party was catered by super Vegan chef extraordinaire Dave Anderson from Madeleine Bistro, a restaurant that is open on an intermittent basis, and Maddy’s formerly known as The Shoppe, which hasn’t even opened once yet. Culinary highlights included BBQ seitan skewers, cashew cheese stuffed dates wrapped in a smokey mushroom, filet un-fish sandos, and some sort of donut/beignet thing that I am considering starting a competitive Vegan eating team for.

The party was fun, fancy and kind of like going to the airport. You had to take a shuttle van to get there (Heeeeey, to the people on my party bus!), you had to take your shoes off, and you left with a giant bag (of awesome goodies). LAXPH (Los Angeles International Party House).

Three …) people in the room donated $25,000 each. 3! Nathan raised 200K in less than 10 minutes. This was impressive, but it’s not nearly enough, I’m sure. They are fighting billion dollar industries and winning, but with ag-gag bills passing, life is about to get harder for them and Bessy The Cow. Do you have extra dollars? Doesn’t have to be five figures, if you’re so inclined, they would gladly accept whatever you can give. And/Or, you could invest in the highly anticipated Shift all Vegan restaurant & bar in Venice, as they are still in need of a few chunks of money in order to open before I die from a suspense O.D.

Cruel by Sue Coe

The inimitable visual artist Sue Coe will be at MooShoes on Thursday, April 19, at 7:00 p.m. to celebrate the launch of her newest book of drawings, paintings and text, Cruel (expect a review on SuperVegan in the nearish future). Cruel revisits the slaughterhouses and factory farming Coe reported on in 1996′s Dead Meat and addresses their continued impact on animals, workers and consumers some 15 years later.

Coe will sign copies of her books and 10 percent of all sales (books, shoes, bags, etc.!) will be donated to United Poultry Concerns. (Thanks, MooShoes!!!)

The fun spills out onto the street where everyone’s favorite mobile restaurant, Cinnamon Snail, will be parked and feeding the masses with its gourmet savory and sweet eats.

Six workers at a Butterball turkey farm in North Carolina face criminal charges after an undercover video revealed alleged animal abuse, and a state employee who tipped off Butterball before a police raid on the farm has pled guilty to obstruction of justice.

Three workers have been arrested, according to Hoke County officials. Terry Johnson has been charged with misdemeanor cruelty to animals, Ruben Mendoza has been charged with animal cruelty and felony identity theft, and Jose Garcia has been charged with felony identity theft. Three other workers are being sought on animal cruelty charges.

I strongly suggest you read the entire ABC News story for the full details.

The arrests and the increase in public awareness of Butterball cruelty are huge steps in the right direction. But we still have two outstandingly awful things happening here: one, of course, is needless cruelty to turkeys, and the other is a state government-employed VETERINARIAN tipping off Butterball about a raid. I’m always flabbergasted by the INSANE hypocrisy of vets who, for example, love parrots but eat chickens. But enabling gratuitous stomping, beating, and otherwise torturing of birds at a factory that rips apart tens of millions of them each year? This person’s license to practice medicine on animals should be revoked and she should be jailed, but instead she’ll be required to take two ethics courses. Whose idea of ethics she’ll be learning about, I don’t know.

This sort of thing reinforces for me in a painfully direct way how important it is to support organizations like MFA who do the very difficult work of confronting animal cruelty head-on every day while I’m sitting at a desk making books. If, like me, it nags at you that you’re not on the front lines, come with me to MFA’s site and make a donation, if you can. Organizations like this need contributions in the form of help AND money.

For more than two decades, Avon, Mary Kay, and Estée Lauder have been among the largest mainstream international companies on PETA’s cruelty-free lists. Avon banned all tests on animals following PETA’s massive “Avon Killing” campaign, and Mary Kay pledged to go cruelty-free after cartoonist Berkeley Breathed mocked the company in his popular Bloom County comic strip. Since then, all three companies have enjoyed the support of PETA and millions of consumers who choose to buy cosmetics from companies that don’t harm animals. But now we have learned that all three companies have been paying for tests on animals at the requirement of the Chinese government—and they did not inform PETA or consumers that their policies had changed. We have no choice but to downgrade them by placing them on our list of companies that test on animals.

You can read the full story here. If this pisses you off, write to these makeup companies to let them know you won’t support testing on animals, no matter where it’s happening.

A real, live, full-time job with one of the most effective organizations in exposing cruelty to farmed animals? And the job is to tell people how great it is to be vegan and how animals are really super (in a far more educated-sounding way)? How wonderful. Primary Responsibilities and Duties:

• Develop and implement innovative regional and national outreach strategies to more effectively raise awareness about farmed animal welfare issues and veganism in the United States

• Speaking of farmed animals, Mercy for Animals has uncovered yet more abuse, this time by Sparboe Egg Farms, the supplier of McDonald’s eggs.
• In other atrocities, the USDA released its 2010 Dairy Checkoff Report, and the results are, well, atrocious: In 2009, $108 million was spent promoting milk, while $283 million was used to push dairy products like cheese. Is this really how we want our tax money spent?
• On a lighter note: Sending out holiday cards? Be sure to order a book of PETA’s stamps featuring veggie celebs, now through January. The stamps, which can be purchased online, are available as of today and feature famous faces such as Woody Harrelson, Chrissie Hynde, Bob Barker and Morrissey, plus historical notables including da Vinci, Tolstoy and Pythagoras. Celebs aren’t always the most consistent carrot eaters, but they do help expose the mainstream to the cause.
• Maybe PETA will consider dedicating a stamp to five-year veghead Jessica Chastain. She’s not the only vegan to make people think the chicken she was chomping was “real.”
• For the young compassionate people in your life: The Vegetarian Resource Group is giving away two $5,000 college scholarships to vegetarian high schoolers graduating in the spring of 2012. If you know a senior who lives and promotes the veg lifestyle, make sure he or she applies by Feb. 20.
• The Clash’s Paul Simonon was arrested earlier this year while working undercover as a vegetarian cook for Greenpeace. He might not have been a vegan pirate cook fighting whalers, but protesting against Artic oil offenders gets a thumbs-up too.
• Jane Brody wrote about vegans’ favorite vitamin in The New York Times: Vitamin B12 Deficiency Can Cause Symptoms That Mimic Aging.
• Arms dealer Viktor Bout, the closest thing to a real-life James Bond villain, is demanding vegan meals in jail.
• Last, I’m sad to say that Marti Kheel has died. I had the privilege of hearing the ecofeminist and the author of Nature Ethics speak a few years ago, and her message was inspiring. RIP, Marti.

As the weather gets colder, and the streets become harsher, we discovered that dogs Occupying Wall Street were in immediate need of dog boots. Also, as the outdoors become less hospitable, fleas and parasites start to gravitate towards warm bodies, and we need to stop any potential foothold that fleas and internal worms may otherwise get in such cramped camping conditions.

Guess we won’t have to drive to Vegas to eat Gardein anymore! Designer to the stars, Waldo Fernandez, will “create the space.”
UPDATE: According to EaterLA, the restaurant will open in January and serve Mediterranean foods.

This is one of Supervegan’s posts for Vegan MoFo 2011.

I’m home sick with a sinus infection, but that doesn’t mean you have to stay in and miss all the fun (like Saturday’s Smorgasburg, which for the first time featured items from the Vegan Bodega). But thankfully Smorgasburg happens every Saturday, so you’ll have another chance to go next week, and the week after that.

Two other very cool events are happening Sunday, 10/23:

• Farm Sanctuary’s Walk for Farm Animals, which starts at 11am in Central Park. If you can’t walk, be sure to donate!
• The Vegan Fall Shop-Up, taking place at the Pine Box Rock Shop, from 12-5pm. Check out the artisanal tempeh, kale chips, hummus made in Brooklyn, farm-fresh veggies, stationery, soy candles, and more. The Vegan Bodega is making an appearance at the Shop-Up, too, so be sure to check them out!

Pamela Anderson recently attended a Vivienne Westwood show in London—in a meat market. And she’s been criticized for modeling for Westwood because the designer uses leather (though thankfully she dropped the fur).

So does this make Pam a pariah? Or is attending vegan events only preaching to the choir, missing an opportunity to possibly educate and ignoring the fact that, like it or not, we’re all part of the larger world?

I work at a fashion magazine, and before that I worked for a foodie publication (I barely survived the barbecue issue). I also help take care of my 89-year-old father, which includes ordering his groceries. He’s unabashedly not vegan, and that’s never going to change. Does that make me a sellout too?

If you did watch it, you’re in very good, anonymous company; after seeing the video, an MFA supporter is matching donations to the org up to $2,500 at Vegan Drinks this Thursday, April 28. Which is so great, because who doesn’t love MFA? I mean, really, is there anyone? Because I will find them, and peel their eyes open and force them to watch this video because it is what’s UP.

Oh, and disclaimer before I post the video: I found it super disturbing. To be totally up-front, actually, I could only stand about 25 seconds, so I’m posting it below, but BE WARNED, this will make you wonder why, why, why there isn’t a cow on her hind legs stabbing farmers with a pitchfork and yelling, YOU LIKE THAT, YOU SICK SON OF BITCH? THAT’S WHAT YOU DID TO MY BABY, and recording that, and posting it on YouTube to put the fear of death in all their twisted farmer friends.

But do watch. If nothing else, it’ll make you want to empty your wallet at Vegan Drinks, leaving yourself only enough moola to buy Matt Rice, MFA’s Director of Operations, and Eddie Garza, their New York Campaign Coordinator, a very tall beer.
