SuperVegan is hiring a New York City Editor. This person will write blog posts, update our NYC events calendar, do some social media work, and help maintain the NYC Restaurant Guide.

We used to do a great job covering the NYC vegan scene. We’ve been slipping lately. But lots of people on the internet still get their NYC vegan info from us and we’d like to provide more of it, more often.

This will be a paid, very part time, contract position. The work will be erratic but regular. Potentially daily, maybe 15 minutes here, 30 minutes there, that kind of thing. The money is real but not amazing*. The ideal candidate is posting all this stuff to their own blog/social media accounts already anyway.

Other attributes of the ideal candidate include:

Residency in and familiarity with the NYC Metro Area.

Excellent communication skills.

Decent self-copyediting skills (ain’t no one else gonna do it for you).

Familiarity with popular social media platforms.

Extensive blogging experience.

A personality that comes through in your writing.

Can accept editorial guidance without taking personal offense.

Photography skills.

Anger and optimism in equal measure.

Online all the damn time.

(If these aren’t all true for you, we might still want you—just let us know which when you apply.)

To apply, send an e-mail to jobs@supervegan.com with:

A note describing why you’re the best person for this job.

A brief description of the last good NYC restaurant meal you ate.

Links to five examples (that you’re proud of!) of your writing on the web.

A list of three great vegan-related things that happened in NYC in 2013.

A list of three great vegan-related things that happened in NYC in 2012.

A list of three great vegan-related things that are happening in NYC later in 2013.

An explanation of what makes a good SEO-optimized headline.

Something you’re pissed-off about.

Something you’re happy about.

Zero attachments! We won’t look at them. And they may even disqualify your entire message.

Questions welcome via e-mail or in the comments.

*The exact amount will vary depending on how much work is taken on. But they pay will probably be at least $50/week.

Most things went pretty well. The main thing that didn’t go well is that our RSS feed got reset, spewing a bunch of old posts back at all of you. Some of them with truncated content, too.

This affected people subscribed directly to the feed and also to our posts-by-email subscribers. (Did you know you can subscribe to the SuperVegan blog by e-mail?)

We’re very sorry about this, and will try very hard to make sure it doesn’t happen again.

In related news, we’ve now got by-category feeds. Some we think may be especially useful are a feed of just our New York City posts and a feed of just our Los Angeles posts. You might also enjoy our recipes feed.

Are there any other specific feeds you think might be useful? Let us know in the comments.

This month, we’ll be benefiting the not-for-profit Friends of Animals, who work to cultivate a respectful view of nonhuman animals, free-living and domestic. Their goal is to free animals from cruelty and institutionalized exploitation around the world. Funds raised at Vegan Drinks will directly enable them to continue their life-saving work and benefit their low-cost spay-neuter program in the NY Metropolitan area by helping to provide subsidies for rescue groups, shelters and people on low-incomes to spay or neuter their cats and dogs at one of the veterinarians in their network. Stuff some dollars in their donation jar and buy a boat load of their raffle tickets so you can walk away with some of the following great prizes:

SuperVegan’s Best Election Night Party Ever starts at 8pm tonight at Fontana’s. We’ll have delicious, organic, local, savory food from Chickpea & Olive (menu above) and delectable, organic, artisinal doughnuts from Dun-Well Doughnuts!

So come hang out, eat, drink, see old friends, make new friends, watch the returns to come in on Fontana’s giant wall-sized projection screen, and listen to great music from DJ Grand Format, DJ Megan Rascal, and myself.

Fontana’s was without electricity for several days after Sandy, but they’re fully reopened now. Most subway, bus, ferry, and regional rail lines are operational again. The weather forcast also looks fine for bicycling—that nor’easter isn’t expected til Wednesday.

While it’s easy to be completely absorbed in the acute crisis caused by Sandy, this election is—in a very different way—also a very big deal. Amongst many other things, it could have a significant impact on how prepared we are for future big-weather events. And—call us crazy!—move this country closer to a political climate which is more ethically enlightened in regard to non-human animals. So, go vote, encourage your friends and relations in swing states to vote, then come to our party. You don’t want to be sitting home alone on Election Night. We hope to celebrate together. We may have to mourn together. Either way, we should be together.

At Fontana’s Bar, 105 Eldridge Street (between Grand St. & Broome St.), New York, NY 10002. 8pm until the election is called (barring any 2000-style craziness).

Admission is free; just pay for what you eat and drink.

RSVP on Facebook, like the with-it kids do.

All are welcome. Vegans and non-vegans, heavy drinkers and teetotalers, people who revere the two party system and electoral college and those who revile ‘em. You don’t have to be eligible to vote to attend, but you do have to be 21 to get in the bar.

With all the devestation and cuddling caused by Hurrican Sandy, New Yorkers are living in the present even more than usual right now. But. Mark your calendars for the night of Election Day, Tuesday, November 6.

We’re throwing a giant vegan election night party at Fontana’s on the Lower East Side (the same place we do Vegan Drinks) with delicious, organic, local, savory food from Chickpea & Olive and delectable, organic, artisinal doughnuts from Dun-Well Doughnuts.

You don’t want to be sitting home alone on Election Night. We hope to celebrate tongether. We may have to mourn together. Either way, we should be together. With lots of delicious food, a full bar, great music, and a giant wall-sized projection screen to watch the returns come in. We did this four years ago at the now-closed Red Bamboo Brooklyn and it was a heck of a great night. Let’s do it again, Vegan NYC!

While we’ll turn on the TV sound when needed, we’ll otherwise be listening great music all night from DJ Grand Format, DJ Jason Das (that’s me! I don’t DJ as much as I used to, but I still got the records), and update: DJ Megan Rascal!

The location is Fontana’s Bar, 105 Eldridge Street (between Grand St. & Broome St.), New York, NY 10002. Here’s a map.

All are welcome. Vegans and non-vegans, heavy drinkers and teetotalers … even Romney voters, I guess, though I’m not sure where you’d find one of those around here. You don’t have to be eligible to vote to attend, but you do have to be 21 to get in the bar.

Remember that pizza I blogged about a few days ago? Well, it won! Two Boots Co-Founder and Owner, Phil Hartman* decided that our pizza pie plan was way better than a bunch of other vegan bloggers’ pizza pie plans.

You’ll be able to eat it for a week starting <del>November 1 (World Vegan Day)</del>, Update: postponed due to Hurricane Sandy. We’ll post the new date once we know it.
and that day only they’ll be giving away free sample slices from 6pm to 8pm at all NYC Two Boots locations (except Park Slope, which is under separate, less-vegan-friendly ownership). They’ll also be unveiling some kind of eco-friendlier pizza box called the GreenBox.

Apparently they did separate East Coast and West Coast contests, and the retired-from-blogging-but-ha-no-not-really QuarryGirl won the West Coast. Congrats to her! But look out next time: if we’d known there were two contests, we would have tried to win both, because, if you hadn’t noticed we have an active and awesome Los Angeles bureau! <del>(As of right now, Quarrygirl’s site is down right now, because she hosts it on Tumblr (I don’t mean to sound smug, my personal site is down for the same reason!))</del>tumblr’s back up!

Here’s the official descriptions from Two Boots HQ:

Representing the East Coast (the pizza that will be served in our NYC stores) is SuperVegan.com!
Meet The SuperVegan: Artichokes, Vidalia Onions, Sundried Tomatoes and Daiya Cheese with Polka Dots of Basil Pesto on a Thick Sicilian Crust!

And the West Coast winner (whose pizza will be served in our LA locations) is QuarryGirl.com!
The Quarry Girl: Organic San Marzano Tomatoes, Shitake Mushrooms, Artichokes and Fresh Garlic with a Swirl of Basil Pesto on a White Cornmeal Crust!

I’d rather eat our pizza than her’s but we both like garlic, artichoke, and basil pesto, so that’s cool. And her spiral is really pretty! Wish I’d thought of that. And I’m pretty sure we didn’t have the option of organic tomatoes; that must be a Cali thang.

We happily deferred to Two Boots’s expertise in making a couple of modifications to the original design: instead of little letters of pesto, our pizza will have polka-dots, and instead of regular thin crust, structural concerns demand a thicker Sicilian crust.

For the picture, they wrote our initials on it GIANT STYLE. But the real pie will be dots.

–
* Not to be confused with the Phil Hartman peddling pizza here:

We got an intriguing offer from the PR department of the venerable “quirky” NYC-based pizza chain Two Boots. Two Boots has long been one of the best places to get a vegan slice, with their veggie-laden “Earth Mother” and more recently the “V for Vegan“, all tarted up with Daiya. They have lots and lots of non-vegan food, too, but Two Boots’s interest in serving more and more vegan food is highly commendable.

So, about that intriguing offer: they want to launch a brand-new vegan pie for World Vegan Day (November 1). And they’re offering a selection of vegan bloggers a chance to design said pie. If they pick ours, they’ll name it after us! I am not above doing a bit of PR for Two Boots if it means a good chance of being able to walk in and order a slice of the SuperVegan pie, with our logo on the label and all. And hey, even if we don’t win, more vegan pizza is a win for everyone.

My first thought was to make a vegan “meat-lover’s” pie, loading on as many greasy pink mock meats as Two Boots’s thick crust can support. I was going to name it “The Patrick Kwan“. But Two Boots doesn’t stock any mock meats and they told me they weren’t going to start just for this. (You might send them friendly e-mail suggestion, though.)

What was the best pie we could make with Two Boots’s available toppings? And what would make it distinctive enough from the “Earth Mother” and “V for Vegan”? The “Earth Mother” is basically a ginourmous pile of mild vegetables, and “V” is Daiya, artichokes, shitakes, red onions, basil and red pepper pesto. We’ve eaten plenty of both. But we can do even better.

One thing’s for sure, this SuperVegan pizza pie’s gotta be decadent. No vegan health-pie here. So we’re using the Daiya, loading on the fatty toppings, and skipping the whole-grain crust. And it can’t be too spicy. I can enjoy jalapeños all over a pizza, but too many people I care about wouldn’t go near such a thing.

Here’s the final proposal:

Vidalia Onion, Artichoke Hearts, Sun-Dried Tomatoes, Garlic, Daiya, and Tomato Sauce, on regular white crust, with basil-pesto “S”s and “V”s scattered all over. You know you want to eat that right up. I sure do. I even have the conceptual diagram to prove it:

(Note to Two Boots; if the pesto-decorations are too labor-intesive, we’ll understand if you need to simplify a bit.)

Join us THIS Thursday, August 30, from 7:00pm to 10:00pm for Vegan Drinks NYC! We’ll occupy the Chandelier Room at Fontana’s Bar, located at 105 Eldridge Street on the Lower East Side. Clementine Bakery will be there to feed you silly and represent for Brooklyn! (Scroll down for Clementine’s special Vegan Drinks menu!)

Grand Format returns to play great music for us. Plus: Special guest DJ set by Arthur Smilios (Gorilla Biscuits, CIV, companion of Lysaght, the most photographed cat on the internet!) and Jay Johnson (Punk Rock Karaoke Chicago, straight A student!, companion of Liam, definitely not the most photographed pup!).

This month, any money you throw in the donation jar will benefit the wonderful (and easy to visit!) Woodstock Farm Animal Sanctuary (WFAS). Surrounded by the Catskill Mountains in the town made famous for peace and music, Woodstock Farm Animal Sanctuary provides shelter to cows, pigs, chickens, turkeys, ducks, sheep, and goats who have been rescued from cases of abuse, neglect and abandonment. WFAS is a place where visitors can come face to face with the animals who most only know as dinner and learn about the devastating effects of modern-day agribusiness on the animals, the environment and human health. At WFAS you can frolic with goats in a large open pasture, sit down with a pig who wants nothing more than a belly rub, cuddle with chickens who seek out your attention or get nuzzled by some very friendly sheep!

WFAS will have a slammin’ raffle for all your raffle-winning needs (all money raised goes to WFAS, of course!). Enter to win the following:

A night’s stay at WFAS’ new bed & breakfast!

Vaute Couture shirt!

Yoga class or photo session with Derek Goodwin!

Acrylic baby hat knitted by Rachel Kay’s mom!

Professional make-up session with Rachel Kay herself!

Shoes from Olsenhaus!

$100 gift certificate to Gristle Tattoo!

V-Spot gift certificate!

Samantha Jovani Handbags!

An astrology reading!

Vegan O’Brien Baking Company cookies!

Show up hungry to enjoy Clementine Bakery’s menu (all vegan, of course):

Queso and chips

BBQ “Ports Bello” slider

Teriyaki wings with peanut sauce

Tempeh reuben finger sammie

French bread supreme pizza

Spicy mac and cheese

Corn on a cob, with lime, parm and paprika

Have you read the new and improved Vegan Drinks FAQ? Please read it, even if you’re a regular at our event. (Really, please read it. All of it.)

We’ll turn down the music around 8:30pm and encourage people to promote themselves, their groups and/or causes for 30 seconds. If you represent a veg*n or animal rights group, come prepared with your (very short!) spiel and literature.
