Celebrate National Veggie Hot Dog Day: July 19

Good reason to go veg.

Good reason to go veg.

Wednesday, July 19 has been proclaimed National Hot Dog Day by the National Hot Dog and Sausage Council. Ah! Nothing more refreshing on a hot summer day than a fat and preservative ladden conglomerate of assorted pig organs, eh?

The good news is Compassion Over Killing is helping vegans organize veggie hot dog events across the country. Visit their website for tips on how to organize a successful veggie dog feed-in and for info on how to get free pro-veg literature to distribute, including their new flyer highlighting the horrors of pig farming (Click here to see the PDF.)

The hot dog of choice in the Lane household is Yves Veggie Dog, but I see Lightlife Smart Dogs and Tofu Pups in nearly every supermarket so that must mean somebody out there likes those too.

Update 7/13: Oops! I forgot to mention that Tofurky has introduced two new kinds of franks, including a Chipotle variety, which was voted “Best New Vegetarian Product of Expo West 2006”.

Update 7/17: Red Bamboo Brooklyn is celebrating National Hot Dog Day by offering two Not Dogs and a side of fries for only $4.96.
