At Esbenshade Farms, one of the nation’s top egg producers.
When not enscribing plugs for sitcoms on their products, the egg industry is printing deceptive images and labelling on its products’ packaging. Packages of eggs often depict images of happy hens nesting or walking through the grass with their chicks. Labels sometimes make official sounding (though meaningless) claims like “animal-friendly,” “certified animal care,” and “naturally raised hens.”
Last year, DC based animal advocacy group Compassion Over Killing (COK) was victorious in having the misleading and shallow “Animal Care Certified” label removed from egg cartons.
Now COK has just filed a petition with the FDA seeking to mandate labels on egg cartons disclosing production methods (i.e. “Eggs from Caged Hens”). Visit the COK website to learn more about the new campaign and to find out how you can take action to help hens and give consumers a dose of the truth they have a right to.
