Lidia Byhower, owner of Cowgirl’s Baking, with her dessert display case
A new 100% vegan bakery in the East Village, Cowgirl’s Baking opened March 6. They feature an extensive daily rotating sweets menu of cookies, donuts, cupcakes (the coffee and donut cupcake is decadently delicious), breads, funnel cakes, cannoli, croissants, churros, and more! For those not interested in dessert there are daily biscuits, knishes, sandwiches, and burritos. Be sure to bring cash until they get their credit card system up.
Other Restaurant Opening News:
A new Blossom Du Jour will be opening at the NY Health and Racquet Club at 62 Cooper Square on March 21 and yet another new storefront on West 67th Street is scheduled for sometime in May.
Vegan Eats in the Non-Vegan Media
Out of all the food trucks in the city, New York Magazine’s Best of NY 2011 picked a veg one (Taïm) while the Village Voice identified their 10 best vegetarian street foods (which features a bit too much dairy, but also has some good vegan options). Gothamist picked NYC’s Best Vegan Desserts (a list that most won’t agree with, but nice of them to try), and Brokelyn just posted a list of The 7 best vegan sandwiches for under $7 (including a few we hadn’t heard of!).
Galaxy Global Eatery, Rice Fort Greene (amongst interesting rumors), and Raw Soul closed in January. Sukhadia’s Indian Vegetarian Gourmet and Yogi’s Kitchen closed in February. Visit our Restaurant Graveyard to eulogize (or heckle) the departed.
Go grab one last sip at Tease Bubble Tea Shop before they close on March 20. In December, Counter announced that it was going to close in February but the owner has pushed back the closing to May or June.
