Bake sales rock!
I just read awesome news in The Olympian about a lesbian couple (Alysia and Krista) who organized themselves, their 9-year-old son, and several friends to form Cupcakes Against Domestic Violence (CADV). The group sells homemade vegan baked goods to raise money for SafePlace, a nonprofit in Olympia, WA that combats domestic and sexual abuse. I’m inspired by CADV’s model for using vegan activism to support our allies in other anti-oppression movements. Kudos to them!
Check out the article for the full story and a fun recipe for “Melt in Your Mouth Mocha Cupcakes.” (Are you as irked as I am that the paper felt a need to demise the vegan appeal by suggesting non-vegan alternatives to ingredients?)
If you’re in Olympia, WA, be sure to stop by their table for some yummy homemade treats at the Downtown Neighborhood Association Street Fair. It’s happening this Sunday (June 18) from 8am to 4pm on Fifth Avenue between Capitol Way and Franklin Avenue.
