Don’t test on me!
Ecover, manufacturer of eco-friendly household cleaning products, has lost their seal of approval from the Vegan Society.
It turns out that Ecover tests detergents on water fleas as a way to measure the environmental impact of their products on aquatic life. It’s annoying that Ecover makes the specious and speciesist argument that water fleas aren’t animals, rather than just sticking to the fact that their priority is mitigating the environmental impact of their products.
It also turns out that they test on blood taken from farmed rabbits. As the
Vegan Society says, “We have mutually agreed with Ecover to withdraw our registration because they are not meeting our criteria.”

on #this is frankly crap. i worked in an organic store stocking ecover until very recently and bought their products as they were economic, un-wasteful and ‘vegan’. i think a boycott may be in order!

on #Ecover uses dairy in their Gentle Herbal Formula With Chamomile and Marigold dishwashing liquid-it contains milk whey.
Friends of Animals contacted them in June and urged others to ask them to drop the dairy.

on #Oh, I’m so mad! I’m glad I have other vegan, eco-friendly choices available for household products; but I feel Ecover has committed a sin of omission–not to mention the worse sin of harming & killing living creatures. My friend says to tell your friends in Western Europe, because Ecover is the most widely used eco-friendly brand there.

on #How in the world could they say they were eco-friendly when some of their products contained dairy? Did they not get the memo that even dairy cows contribute a fair amount of greenhouse gases to the planet?
Doesn’t surprise me either that they pulled the “water fleas aren’t really animals” and using rabbit blood crap either. Perhaps it should be suggested that should they wish to test on blood they should opt to open their own veins. I’m sure with the PhDs floating around in most labs that someone took a class on phlebotomy.
