2007 Green Issue

Elle has done it again with a great Green Issue! It’s packed full of useful information, insightful interviews and tips for living a more green-friendly lifestyle. There’s something for everyone inside.

The fun part was reading “Green Stars” (p. 212) which lists great products for skin, hair and makeup. Many were 95-100% organic and paraben-free but for our purposes five were listed as vegan: Trilogy Booster Capsules, Pangea Organics Facial Mask, Aveda Petal Essence Eye Definer, Aveda Confixor Liqued Gel and Weleda Rosemary Hair Oil. It’s exciting to see a mainstream magazine note vegan cosmetics.

“The Carnivore’s Dilemma” (p. 234), was a more serious highlight and well worth reading. The story follows Marisa Meltzer and Kara Jesella as they “veg out and find the surprising benefits of eating conscientiously.” During their experiment, the two dine at Candle 79 and co-owner Joy Pierson tells them what vegans usually end up telling people who think abstaining from using animals is a foreign concept, “Don’t think about what you can’t do, but about what you can do. Try new fruits and vegetables. Go to the farmers’ market.”

I also read something I wasn’t aware of. Co-author of Grub: Ideas for an Urban Organic Kitchen, Anna Lappé points out even veganism can have environmental drawbacks because some vegans eat a lot of soy and the soy industry is notoriously environmentally tone-deaf. Is that true? Tell me what you think!

Generally, I liked the article, but it was disappointing to read Meltzer and Jesella “both succumbed to the omnivore lifestyle” a few months later. The two did learn a lot, but apparently not enough to change their lives and save the animals.

Dear Elle,

Loved, loved, looooved your 2007 Green Issue! From “Green House Effect” with Danny Seo, interviews with Green friendly activist actors Orlando Bloom and Julia Roberts to your “Green Awards” were all fantastic! Kudos to Elle staffers Anne Slowey and Lindsay Talbot for their “lesson in green interior design.” “The Insider” with Origins global president Daria Myers was so inspiring. I also enjoyed the feature on Green top models Amber Valletta and Angela Lindvall. But what really compelled me to write this letter was the Elle Beauty, Body & Health section listing so many great products that are paraben-free, 95-100% organic and especially those that are 100% vegan! “The Carnivore’s Dilemma” was also an interesting read, though it was very disappointing Marisa Meltzer and Kara Jesella didn’t stay with veganism after all they learned. Nonetheless, we are thrilled to see a mainstream fashion publication recognize real health and beauty can be planet-conscious and cruelty-free. Now everyone is better able to be glamorously Green. Thank you!

    so did Elle use recycled paper for it’s big “green” issue…chances are probably slim to none…what about the ink as well? was that made from a bio-degradable source such as hemp oil? probably not…so with all those subscriptions mailed out and the newstands full of Elle’s “green” issue, i think it’s safe to say that the publishers of Elle aren’t thinking too green…

    I personally don’t eat much soy anyway, but regarding the issue–animals raised for meat eat way more soy than humans ever could, so by being vegan, you’re consuming less soy overall.

    Ditto to what Canaduck said. Also, soy is in tons of packaged foods consumed by omnivores and herbivores alike. Vegans are not soy-grubbers even if we do eat as much tofu as we’re characterized as eating. Which I know I don’t.

    I hardly think ELLE deserves any kind of praise for paying attention to environmentalism. “Green” is just another thing to consume, and just think of all the trees that die every month to send out the business-as-usual crap.
