NYC Vegan Valentine's Day Specials

February 10, 2009 7:55pm
Don't forget that Vegan Treats are available all over NYC.

Don't forget that Vegan Treats are available all over NYC.

Valentine's Day is not quite the extravaganza of gluttony that is Thanksgiving, but if you're one of the lucky few who can afford to pump some cash into the NYC vegan restaurant economy right now, you've got plenty of choices. Whether you're going all out with the romance or just enjoying International Quirkyalone Day, you can choose from:

Blossom has a $65 three course prix fixe menu, while Cafe Blossom offers five courses for $65.

Candle 79's four course prix fixe is $70, while sister restaurant Candle Cafe gives you four courses for $52, plus a la carte options.

Counter's got a $50 four course prix fixe, plus an optional $25 wine pairing.

The Global Giving Circle is holding a Valentine's Day Chocolate Tasting Extravaganza, a fundraiser to benefit Project Hope & Fairness, which supports African cocoa farmers and their families. Tickets start at $25 per person; I'm not sure how vegan it'll be.

Luxee wants vegans to know that their $14 "Cirque de Pomme" (layers of tofu apple mousse, spiced apple puree, red wine gelee, miniature almond strudel, topped with red wine sorbet) would make a perfect after-dinner dessert. They also sell vegan sorbets and mini-desserts.

Pure Food and Wine is going all out with a special Valentine's week menu. The five course meal (excluding drinks) will cost $72 and will be available from February 11-18.

Red Bamboo Brooklyn is offering a $28 three course prix fixe, although Red Bamboo Manhattan seems to have dropped the ball.

Please let us know if we're missing anything good!

If there's not a link to a menu, it means I couldn't find it online, but I called the restaurant and they told me the cost and number of courses. If you call them up, they should be able to tell you what's on the actual menu (and while you're at it, remind them that it's 2009 and they really ought to be putting these things on the internet nowadays!)

Well, I know that for a vegan dessert, nothing beats Lula's Sweet Apothecary in NYC. They're now open on Sundays.

I soooo want to go to Pure Food and Wine. When I read their menu my mouth watered. In fact, I'm currently drooling. Excuse me.

    Hi,

    Just wanted to add,

Gobo - food for the five senses, has no prix-fixe menu for Valentines day. Instead, you choose what you want and pay for what you like! We have a very special dessert that night, lychees stuffed with champagne sorbet. I promise it's yummy. Come check us out at www.myspace.com/goborestaurant

    Hi Patrick,

We have a prix fixe deal Monday to Friday(Monday is all day, Tuesday to Friday is 11:30am to 6:00pm)! It's called a "First Seating Menu." 3 courses for $25 includes dessert.

In the future, we will be having more specials and tasting menus rather then wait for a holiday.

    Thanks,
    Darryn

    Hey George,

Is there something you have against Gobo? What you are talking about doesn't even relate to the topic! But in anycase... let me entertain this "silly insinuation..."

Yes we use a mushroom extract. No it is not MSG. If we wanted to use MSG, we would have just used MSG. It's a lot cheaper! It actually replaces MSG & salt, meaning it simply gives food more flavor like any spice. Also, we actually use very little of it.

Here is a link to the EXACT product we use. It is a pdf file, here it is. (By the way, I know Chinese characters on food products can scare away some people especially after all the bad publicity recently, but this product is from Taiwan. Taiwan has much better manufacturing processes then China.) Here is a link to the company itself Company Link

Also here are links to yummy vegan recipes using this exact mushroom extract, various Asian vegan recipes. Also, you can try making some vegan pho!

There has also been some studies mushroom extract can be healthy. Here is a link to one. Here is another.

Battling the MSG Myth, this is a great site. I would follow this diet if you suffer from those illnesses described.

The bottom line is, we do not use MSG.
