If you’re one of those people who can’t tell the difference between want and need, then get yourself to one of Reverend Billy and the Church of Stop Shopping’s revivals. The good reverend leads his flock away from sin, temptation, and unnecessary purchasing. He calls us out on our spending addictions, label lust, and general disregard for the deleterious effects our hobby shopping has on the environment, the small business owners who are being run out of our neighborhoods, and the sweatshop laborers who toil away to bring us all the stuff we’ll never need.
Not only does the SS Choir kick ass—their voices will make the hair on the back of your neck stand up—Reverend Billy’s sermons will teach you a thing or two, like how to step away from a potential purchase. And he’ll remind you why branding and superstores are such bad ideas. At the last “service” I attended, the congregation said amen when Peter Silvestri, owner of Whole Earth Bakery, announced that his landlord had just renewed his lease for another seven months.
Beginning Aug. 6, Reverend Billy will be laying hands on the spending-afflicted in South Street Seaport on Sundays at 2 p.m. (and on Sept. 11 at 6 p.m.). Go and repent for your sins—or prepare for the Shopocalypse!
