Some Political Wins for the Animals!

November 8, 2006 7:47am

The animal community saw some victories at the ballot box yesterday.

In Michigan, an overwhelming 68% of voters just said no to Prop 3, which would have made mourning doves a target for hunting. Thanks to everyone who voted against this!

Farther south, Prop 204 passed with a 61% majority. This makes Arizona the second state to ban gestation crates for pigs and the first to outlaw veal crates. Hooray for Arizona!

In California, Prop 90 was defeated. Had it passed, the amendment would have “erode[d] our ability to pass laws that protect natural resources, wildlife and habitat,” according to the HSUS.

On the downside, Georgia’s Amendment 2 has passed, which means the “tradition of fishing and hunting and the taking of fish and wildlife” are now sanctioned by the state’s constitution.

But to end on a positive note: Every single LOHV-NYC-endorsed candidate won his or her seat! Way to go, humane voters!
