No Impact, Yes Media Circus

March 23, 2007 7:52pm

The New York media is atwitter with the tale of Colin Beavan, a.k.a. No Impact Man, but they're ignoring the Impact of Man's No Meat rule. Beavan, his wife Michelle Conlin and their two-year-old daughter Isabella are spending the year (November '06-'07) eating only locally grown food, producing no trash (with the help of worm composting), using no paper and avoiding plane, train and automobile transportation--and enacting the biggest self-promotional PR coup a book-deal-hopeful could possibly dream of. Beavan was veg before the experiment started; now Conlin has joined him. But there's little to no discussion in the media of this detail and Beavan gives it only a passing mention on his blog. I guess it's not as exciting as the worms (ahem, which, by the way, are vegan, New York Times).

The run-down: Beavan-Conlins profiled in the Times, Beavan's Times op-ed, his interview on WNYC, Gawker's snarky retorts and the skeptics at Apartment Therapy even have a cute poll on the topic.
