Whole Foods Bowery opens this Thursday, March 29th

The ginormous Whole Foods Bowery in Manhattan’s Lower East Side will be opening this Thursday, March 29th. Personally, I’m thrilled that it’s literally right outside the Second Avenue F train station since I live just a few stops away in Brooklyn and can now kiss goodbye to the days of lugging my groceries from Whole Foods Union Square and Whole Foods Chelsea. Another perk, it will be open one hour later than the other Whole Foods markets; it closes at 11 p.m.

Tomorrow night, Whole Foods Bowery will be hosting an “almost open party” to benefit the environmental group, Riverkeeper. The party “will feature an evening of tasty gourmet treats, local brews and wines.” The $25 required donation at the door for the party will be matched by Whole Foods up to $40,000.   It is nice to see more health food stores in the neighborhood, but this Whole Foods is opening up next to http://4thStreetFoodCoop.org/ Manhattan's only non-profit retail food cooperative. The 4th Street Food Co-op is an all vegetarian, volunteer run, community resource that is going to have to struggle with such a large store 4 blocks away.

  I doubt this Whole Foods will kill the 4th St. Food Coop if the Union Square Whole Foods didn't. The coop is such a neighborhoody, anti-establishment kind of place, and WF is so glossy and corporate. Also, if the coop at all has its act together, it should be a lot cheaper on average than WF.
  
  I'd be more worried about Earth Matters.
