Health Conscious Express is at 45 First Avenue, between Second and Third Streets in the East Village.

The East Village (and First Avenue in particular) is not exactly hurting for veg restaurant choices, but Health Conscious Express is a welcome newcomer. It's a great place for a quick, cheap snack, and there really isn't much other veggie Caribbean or Ital food in the area.

The space is pleasant and bright, though the Rasta hippie vibes may be a little too thick for some jaded-on-purpose New Yorkers (you know who you are). The food is all inexpensive. I was especially impressed by the delicious patties made on premises, which come in at least three flavors: veggie, soy and ackee.

They've also got sandwiches and burgers, organic juices and salads, as well as raw (and not raw) desserts. Except for the frozen yogurt, virtually everything is vegan. I hope Health Conscious Express does well and stays around. I spend a decent amount of time in the neighborhood and it's great to have fresh vegan fast food options beyond hot dogs and falafel!
