Okay, what is with all the pet costumes?
The Brooklyn Animal Resource Coalition is holding a Dog Show and Parade this Sunday, October 14, from noon-5pm. Their "Super Pup" themed parade will have cash prizes for the best superhero costumes, followed by a dog show, all to benefit BARC's shelter animals.
Next Sunday, October 21, the Mayor's Alliance/Maddie's Spooktacular Pet Adoption Festival takes place in Union Square from noon-5pm. Over 200 dogs, cats, puppies, kittens, and rabbits will be available for adoption. Oh, and there will be adorable costumes here, too.
If you still haven't gotten your fill of adorable pet costumes, check out the Canine Comedy Halloween Pet Costume Party on Monday, October 29, from 7-9pm. They've got celebrity judges including Richard Belzer and Triumph the Insult Comic Dog, and ticket fees benefit the Mayor's Alliance for NYC Animals.
Finally, Farm Sanctuary's Halloween Bash takes place Tuesday, October 30, from 8-11pm. They'll have complimentary vegan food, a brief open bar, a costume contest for humans, and Joan Jett. Can't really go wrong there.

I just get tired of the automatically presumed equation of "Vegan/Vegetarian" with "animal lover" and sometimes think it detracts from the more fundamental/important issues...like ethics, and sustainable living (including food production).

I agree that these aren't inherently vegan events, but they are all helping improve humans' relationships with our fellow species, which is a very vegan thing to do.

vegetarian/vegan = someone who so emotional about cute and cuddly animals that they don't eat them or their products...this is a stereotype that seems to never go away and alienates a whole population of intellectuals who might be more compelled to abstain from animal exploitation for higher ethical or environmental or health reasons rather than tag themselves as a bleeding heart pet lover...like pretty much everyone i know.

Not to mention that beyond the cute cuddly animals, all of these events benefit organizations that do actual work to reduce animal suffering. If that's not of interest to vegans, I don't know what is.
