Port Authority Plans to Exterminate JFK Airport Cats

A recently rescued JFK kitten, courtesy of Gothamist.

Hundreds of cats living in feral colonies at JFK Airport are at risk. The cats are descendants of lost travelers' pets and abandoned pets and have been fed by airport employees for years.

Port Authority spokesman Pasquale DiFulco claims that the cats' food attracts birds, which endanger aircraft. (Has this guy ever seen a feral cat? They kill birds!)

The cats are being rounded up, which means almost certain death for feral cats. Rescue groups want the Port Authority to consider a far more humane Trap-Neuter-Return program.

Here's what you can do to help:

Show up at the rally (organized by In Defense of Animals) outside of Port Authority headquarters, off Union Square, at 225 Park Avenue South, between 18th and 19th Street on Monday, Oct 29th from Noon to 1pm.

Call, fax and email Port Authority officials and protest the extermination effort. Urge them to meet with NYC Feral Cat Initiative representatives and come up with an intelligent plan to Trap-Neuter-Return and manage the JFK cats.
