Last week, Los Angeles’ Entertainment Today published a vegan hipster travelogue/guide to Portland, Oregon–maybe because it’s a veritable vegan playground, with an average age of 35 to boot. PeTA calls Portland the most vegetarian-friendly city in the country (up from 4th place in ’05): it’s home to the newly re-hashed Herbivore magazine and shop, Food Fight! Vegan Grocery and tasty vegan chow at Veganopolis and Voodoo Donuts. And if you’re in the area this weekend, there’s a sweet vegan potluck party and a free Meatout afternoon event. Do I sound jealous? Because I am.
But not all is sunny on the left coast. Last Friday, beloved vegan-friendly alterna-publishers Microcosm closed their Portland shop; mail order ops will now be headquartered in Bloomington, Indiana (not even in the top ten). But a bite of some Portland-only eats will help the news go down a little easier. Damn you’re spoiled.
Update: There’s even more sweet listings over at the VegPortland guide if you’re feeling masochistic or if you live in Portland (jerk).
