Are they INSANE??!! It looks like they've just left yet another shill review today. "Clarise" just happened to join today to leave this one sole review. Just like the other shill review, she suspicisouly feels the need to mention the ages of her (fake!) children. Not to police this, but this is so absurd and insulting! Have they not noticed that they've totally been called out and made a mockery of? When will the stupidity stop? Please, please give it up people...

Edita, can you leave some reviews for restaurants in Queens? We've got a bunch listed, but most of them don't show up in the rankings because they don't have any reviews. (And please let us know if we're missing any.)

Doesn't the fact that you no longer live in NYC disqualify you from making elitist comments about the outer-boroughs??
;-)
Seriously though, Queens is way more veg-friendly than most people probably realize. I live in Queens and there are several 100% vegetarian restaurants within walking distance or a short bus/subway ride away from me, and some of them are pretty awesome. I have not been to Tierra Sana yet, but I'd be happy to post a real review once I do.

That cracks me up. I think that Tierra Sana HAD potential (I live across the street) but is so poorly mismanaged that it's got no shot. I have spoken to the management a few times, and they have some crazy health beliefs that cause them NOT to season their food. They had no idea what seitan was (after some education, I think they know offer it) and didn't want to serve tofu because they wanted to be organic (huh?).

Some of the reviews may be fake, but I think some people are just so desperate for outer borough veganness that they are willing to see past a complete lack of seasoning. I will say that as for their attempt at building community? That's awesome.

Yeah I did,and I read the other comments. So why is it on a vegan site to fool people? Also, he did make a comment about it being appropriate that the president is "mindful" of cruelty inflicted on animals so I thought this was just an extention of that. And his mindset about preferring a shelter dog also fit the picture, so I thought it was just possible. He is unusual in lots of other ways...

But please make sure to leave your review on Tierra Sana's actual restaurant page so that people who search for the restaurant will see it and so that your ratings will count as part of its overall rating (used in our "Top Restaurants" listings).

I actually went there for lunch not too long ago on a rare trek to visit a friend in Queens, and I thought it was great. They had a really cheap "balanced meal" lunch special with soup, salad, three different things on a plate, and a little fruit cup for dessert. Everything was good, and I'll definitely go again if I'm ever out there. However, what they did is pretty pathetic.

I actually live near this restaurant. I have never eaten inside, but I have gotten take out. Here's my real thoughts on their food:
They have an odd menu where they offer more dishes during the day on weekdays than than do in the evening and weekends. That alone, makes no sense to me b/c I would think more people would be eating there on nights and weekends and would like more variety. My husband and I ordered some veggie sushi, eggplant stew and smoothies. I was not a fan of the veggie sushi b/c it had quinoa instead of rice and was wrapped loosely and fell apart. I love quinoa, but you had to hunt through the quinoa to see the fillings. I was not a fan of the smoothies b/c they had pieces of almond at the bottom, which was not pleasant to drink. BUT the eggplant stew was delicious. There web site makes it seem like they are trying to be a major veg-friendly presence in Forest Hills. I commend the effort, since Forest Hills itself is not very vegan friendly, but I am disappointed that the food wasn't better and that the menu offerings are limited the only times I'm home to eat them.

We DO NOT NEED to eat animals to live. We DO NOT NEED to raise animals for food. Most Humans WANT to eat animals. Most humans, if they were given the choice, would not choose to kill an animal for their food. If she chooses to kill animals to pleasure her taste buds and her wallet, then she has to live with herself, we'll see how long she lives...Colon cancer anyone??
I wonder if she has a ritual for dealing with her LUST for killing and her GREED! Maybe she can run on the 2012 ticket with Palin! Yikes!
I actually do have some sympathy for an outer-borough veg restaurant trying to hack it and doing something slightly desperate to drum up some business. I just think that, instead of trying to trick us, they should have offered supervegan readers a discount (or even a $4 metro card to come out there) or something. Win us over with love, not lies!

as a Canadian, I am ashamed about this. The Canadian people supporting this live in a remote part of Atlantic Canada with poor employment and low income. It is one of the very few ays they can make a buck.
Most urban Canadians are repulsed by this, as you are.
Keep the pressure on and it will end, even though the progress may seem glacial, it will end.

Jill on Is The Term Conscientious Meat Eater An Oxymoron?

I agree with Karlene 100%--I'm a vegan in large part because I care about the fate of the planet, and eating animals is not as ecologically efficient or sustainable as sticking to a vegan diet. With this in mind, continuing to use domesticated animals for food as a way to preserve species diversity doesn't really make sense--the most serious current threat to biodiversity is the rate at which we're using up the earth's resources and accumulating waste.

In her interview, Carpenter says she performs slaughter rituals because "what we're doing is something that needs to be forgiven." I just don't understand why people choose to continue to do something that requires forgiveness--for many reasons--when there's a relatively simple, viable alternate option.

Hmmm... eat meat to recover more quickly from the burns, just to die of heart disease or cancer. Seems to me, it would make more sense to amp up the plant based protein and leave meat out of it.

HobokenKirsten on Is The Term Conscientious Meat Eater An Oxymoron?

Although SOME people will rationalize their behavior instead of changing their behavior, I still think that we should continue to work to improve animals' lives in ANY WAY that we can in the meantime. Especially since most people aren't even THINKING about their behavior in regards to the animals they are eating. Prop 2 is a good way to help the animals at least a tiny bit in the reality of the here and now while simultaneously making people start to think about the food they put in their mouths.

Let me put it this way... if all animals were currently being farmed in a somewhat 'compassionate' manner, would any of us push for them to be farmed much more inhumanely, so that we could more easily make the argument that they shouldn't be farmed at all? NO! Of course not.

I think that the woman in this article is not representative of most people. I think that most rational, moderate people would conclude that it's a whole lot easier (and rational) to just give up on the flesh eating thing & go across the street for a Boca burger or a vegan chicken patty, than to start farming & slaughtering animals in the backyard and creating rituals to deal with the guilt of knowing it is wrong to kill!

I think we should be focused on the majority of people who are going to be a little more balanced & moderate than this woman and are more likely to make steady, slow, consistent, and more lasting decisions that move either one direction or the other. Hopefully, measures like Prop 2, will get those people moving consistently in the RIGHT direction rather than vacillating all over the place like this woman or moving even farther in the WRONG direction, like we, as a society, have been doing the past several decades.

I think that for MOST people (not this woman obviously), but most rational people, accepting that farm animals matter, is probably going to be a first step toward accepting that maybe they matter enough not to be eaten! (psychologists say that MOST people make consistent decisions, so Prop 2 would be a first step toward a vegan conclusion, under that rationale).
