Summer camp for veg*ns!
Forget the beach—hang out with people who think and eat like you do at the 32nd annual Vegetarian Summerfest, in Johnstown, Pennsylvania.
The event, organized by the North American Vegetarian Society, takes place on a mountaintop wildlife preserve (650 acres worth!). Socialize with other vegetarians and vegans while hiking the area’s 40 acres of trails, taking cooking classes, and attending workshops and lectures on topics like nutrition, animal rights, and compassionate living.
Just a few of this year’s featured speakers: Carol Adams, author of The Sexual Politics of Meat: A Feminist-Vegetarian Critical Theory and Living Among Meat Eaters; Gene Bauston, president and cofounder of Farm Sanctuary; Howard Lyman, director of Voice for a Viable Future and author of Mad Cowboy: Plain Truth From the Cattle Rancher Who Won’t Eat Meat; Erik Marcus, author of Meat Market: Animals, Ethics, and Money and the force behind Vegan.com; and Dan Piraro, creator of the cartoon Bizarro.
Fees include all lectures and entertainment, yummy vegan meals, and on-campus housing at the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown.
