Big Dairy found its way into our schools once again this week, this time under the guise of “Ag Literacy Day.” On March 20th, New York State children in grades pre-K through 3 were read Extra Cheese Please!: Mozzarella’s Journey from Cow to Pizza, a book that reinforces the lie that milk comes from happy cows on a small farm. After reading the book, children participated in a pizza making workshop.
Ag Literacy Day is bad news for NY kids. 28% of New York adolescents are overweight or at risk of becoming overweight, according to the New York Department of Health. Knowing that they are at such risk, should we really offer them misinformation on what is healthy at such a young age? Should we also lie to them about where their food comes from?
Let’s do something to keep this from happening again!
