Ladies and gents, today is World Vegetarian Day.
As a good number of vegans can attest; we of the cruelty-free caliber can be a righteous bunch. Most vegans don’t need a day celebrating vegetarianism. We don’t even need a back-patting day celebrating veganism for that matter. We celebrate everyday. We voice our volition through the choices we make; the food we consume; the causes we champion and the products we buy.
I’d venture to say that most squinting-eyed-ingredient-reading vegans are happy with their decision. They’re ecstatic at the prospect of making this world a better place for all bipeds and quadrupeds; from the furry to the fuzzy, to the big and small – each day is a testament to our choice.
With that said, I think that both World Vegetarian Day and Vegetarian Awareness month are amazing causes; effective crusades to educate those who haven’t had the light switch in their brains turned on.
As I sit here typing this, I know that this day has little to do with those of us in the choir; instead, it has everything to do with those who may or may not know. This is their day.
It’s up to us though, to spread the word; to have the conversation and to share a little soymilk in our coffee. That’s the celebration. That’s what this day is all about. Now let’s get veggin’!
