Not a Tofurky!
Peta2′s having a contest in which five winners will take home the latest vegan turkey innovation: Garden Protein’s Veggie Turkey Breast With Wild Rice and Cranberry Stuffing. It comes from Whole Foods and, though I haven’t tried it, I assume it’s better than a Tofurky (but then, I’d rather gnaw on a slab of rubber than eat a Tofurky).
Anyway, peta2′s clever twist is that in order to win, you have to spam your friends and family with a 500 word essay on why you won’t be eating a turkey this Thanksgiving. Way to start a thousand dinner-table arguments, peta2.
If you want to take this opportunity to make yourself a social pariah to all your relatives, more power to you. You have until Sunday to enter. I’m a wuss, so I’m going to surround myself with people who agree with me instead.

on #I guess I’m in the minority, or maybe I just haven’t gotten out much (there isn’t a lot of vegan friendly in Tallahassee, FL), but I enjoy Tofurkey roasts, a lot. We make gravy from scratch and I smother it.

on #I agree directorspence – what’s wrong with Tofurky? I imagine there’s even less vegan friendly stuff here in Brisbane, Australia.

on #yeah, i agree, tofurkey can be good if prepared right and slathered in the right tasty sauce. It’s cool to see other alternatives out there though.

on #tofurkey is a huge reason that i went vegan. i love it! i went vegan last new years thinking that tofurkey was year round only to find out that it was seasonal! seasonal? sure, the slices are available but not the scrumptious roast. here is a sad tale… Imagine yourself in a store holding a tofurkey in your little hands for the first time in a year. knowing that you could take it home and prepare it lovingly and wolf the whole goddam thing down in a minute. now imagine you have to choose between that amazing tofurkey loaf and beers.
it’s sad being a poor drinky vegan…

on #I’ve contacted Whole Foods, Wild Oats and New Seasons. None of them are carrying this item, even in vegan-friendly Portland. What’s up with that?

on #Tofurkey is great if you prepare it right. It’s all about the basting!

on #heck, i like the tofurkey, the whole thing with the tempeh drumsticks, etc.

on #Tofurkey slices are definitely the best, but my memories of the roast-in-a-box are not good ones. And the Field Roast Celebration Roast is just pure salt. I’m curious to try this Garden Protein thing. (What an awful name, though!)
All that said: I have Tofurkey in my freezer right now, because I am curious if it’s as bad as I remember.
