Tuesday at 2 p.m., the House Subcommittee on Commerce, Trade, and Consumer Protection will debate the American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act, which prohibits “the shipping, transporting, moving, delivering, receiving, possessing, purchasing, selling, or donation of horses and other equines to be slaughtered for human consumption, and for other purposes.” If all goes well, H.R. 503 will make its way to the Senate.
HSUS has come out in support of H.R. 503, hoping to put an end to human consumption of horse flesh (which takes place mostly in Europe and Asia), and until then, to expand protections for the horses who are transported to Canada for slaughter. Other organizations working on the issue are Hoofpac Political Action Committee, Equine Advocates, and Just Say Whoa!! to Horse Slaughter.
If you haven’t done so yet, call and e-mail your representatives today and ask them to support H.R. 503.
