Home Cooking for Your Pets

Many American pet owners are now beginning to home cook for their pets as a result of the massive Menu Foods recall, and the Amazon rank of Home-Prepared Dog & Cat Diets: The Healthful Alternative has leapt to 1,000 from a before-recall 60,000. (Also of note is Dr. Pitcairn’s New Complete Guide to Natural Health for Dogs & Cats. Both books have lots of non-vegan recipes. Try Vegetarian Cats & Dogs for meatless recipes.)

Vegetarian Dogs has a free starter recipe, but you should substitute coconut butter or olive oil for avocado, as it has been demonstrated to be unsafe for dogs, particularly in large quantities or as a steady diet. Harbingers of a New Age has great supplements for vegan home cookers (Vegedog and Vegecat) that make it easy to create a nutritionally complete meal in your kitchen. Holistic Blend also has vegan supplements and treatments for just about any health issue in dogs and cats, from hot spots to hip dysplasia.

There are also a few vegan kibble dog foods for those who don’t have the time to go 100 % home cooked. Check out Evolution diet or V-dog. My dogs love both of them. Also, Wow Bow also has a custom made vegan kibble that you can order with things like chickpeas, fakin bacon, etc. These foods are complete and balanced for complete nurtrition and do not require any supplementation. I encourage you to get the slaughterhouse out of your kitchen when it comes to feeding your dogs.
