Meatstore: Take a butcher’s
If your idea of an artistic experience is looking at paintings of meat, then pop by gallerythe in Carroll Gardens, Brooklyn, to check out the latest show curated (or should that be cured?) by Mike Geno and others. It’s called MeatStore, and you don’t even have to go into the gallery. In fact, you can’t. You have to look at the paintings through the window.
Unlike the extraordinary work of the incomparable Sue Coe or the extraordinarily wealthy but incredibly overrated Damien Hirst, the idea here seems to be to draw your attention to the kitsch aesthetics of meat without really paying attention to how meat becomes aestheticized or literally and metaphorically removed from the animal in the first place. But, if you’re walking by, you may want to stop and take a butcher’s. Or, failing that, check out the art at Veganica.
