March ends in a few hours, but it is still Women’s History Month! Women undoubtedly deserve recognition for their efforts and contributions to our history. We also want to note what all vegan women of the world have done and continue to do for their well-being, the animals and the planet. With veganism, women truly embody the nurturing life-giving essence of womanhood.
Being drawn to the topic of celebrities, I cannot help but think of famous vegan women who are making history while promoting the cause. Their actions send a positive message not only about veganism but also about becoming a more wholesome individual and not being afraid to represent that.
Alicia Silverstone is arguably one of the most popular female vegan celebrities. Known for her early appearances in Aerosmith videos to Clueless and other successful movies, the star once said, “Nothing’s changed my life more. I feel better about myself as a person, being conscious and responsible for my actions and I lost weight and my skin cleared up and I got bright eyes and I just became stronger and healthier and happier. Can’t think of anything better in the world to be but be vegan.” Tell it like it is, Alicia! I dare say all vegans can relate to that statement.
I was thrilled to find out the star of one of my favorite TV shows is also vegan. Lindsay Wagner wowed us in the late 70s as Jamie Sommers in The Bionic Woman. Thanks to that role, she’s the first woman to win an Emmy award playing a female action hero! But running at 80 miles an hour, being able to hear sounds half a mile away and lift hundreds of pounds with her bionic right arm is a chocolate tofu cakewalk compared to the strength, integrity and global impact of her choice to live cruelty-free.
When it comes to music, chart-toppers Fiona Apple and K.D. Lang are certainly successful singer/songwriters. From “Fast As You Can” to “Constant Craving,” these two know how to make us listen, but nothing sounds sweeter than the message they carry with their veganism. That’s a tune I’ll put on repeat!
Thank you ladies, you make us proud!
