Maine Links Abuse of Women with Abuse of Animals

Finally, politicians are catching up to facts that have been known to animal rescuers, law enforcement and campaigners against domestic violence for some time: battered women may not leave batterers because they fear for the safety and the lives of the companion animals left behind; and that the abuse or killing of companion animals by batterers is often a sign to women, “You’re next.”

According to a story in the New York Times, and commented on in the hounded, cowed, and badgered blog the state of Maine has enacted legislation to allow animals “to be included in protection orders in domestic violence cases.” There are also programs of a similar nature in Columbus, OH, Nashville, TN, and St. Louis, MO. The next step, surely, is to make animal abuse a felony and not a misdemeanor.
