Leonard Lopate c. 1986. (You’d grow a beard too.)
On New York Public Radio station WNYC last Friday, talk host Leonard Lopate dedicated a segment to a kind of Vegetarianism 101. His two “expert” guests, Marion Nestle and Colin Spencer answered LenLo’s dopey questions and fielded calls from the less-dopey public. You can listen to the whole segment here at the WNYC site. (A warning: it’s a pretty sobering 30 minutes. I suggest a listening session paired with a strong vegan White Russian.)
The discussion almost completely skirted the moral and ethical issues in favor of a misleading discussion on vegetarian and vegan health. Nestle talked about humans being omnivores (though cited no evidence to back up her claims), and even made overtures to veganism being an unhealthy and “far too difficult” lifestyle.
But however clueless LenLo and his “experts” are on the subject, I think this is a great in to tell him how we feel about his handling (or ignoring!) of the subject. You can write to Lenny at lopateshow@wnyc.org.
