As if “colony collapse disorder” weren’t bad enough, the U.S. military is now using honeybees to detect toxic gas by putting them in inhalation chambers with poisons. Apparently the buzzing of the bees changes as they encounter–and are affected by–the different variations of toxins. Why torture them when they’re down? I’ll give you one guess and it rhymes with: to create a device that will help commercial beekeepers resurrect their dwindling business as a result of “colony collapse disorder.”

You might not use honey or beeswax or royal jelly, but your tax dollars go to poisoning bees. It’s frustrating, it’s humbling and it’s unfair. Welcome to America.
