Mention school lunch and images of mystery meat and wierd wobbly jello pop into most people’s heads. Fortunately, the New York Coalition for Healthy School Lunches (NYCHSL) is working to change that. The non-profit works to promote optional vegan entrees in cafeterias, healthy snack foods, farm to school programs, and nutrition education to encourage healthier choices.
This school year, NYCHSL will even team up with Candle Cafe to serve healthy lunches to fifty elementary school students at Future Leaders Institute in Harlem. These kids will be participating in a pilot vegan school meal program that will hopefull serve as a model of nutritional excellence for other schools to follow.
You can support their work and sample food from some of NYC’s best healthy restaurants by attending their Fall benefit next Wednesday. There will also be celebrity guests, including host Loretta “Hot Lips” Swit from MASH! Tickets start at $100, but think of it as an investment in the children, who, after all, are our future.
Wednesday, October 4, 6-9pm. Future Leaders Institute. 134 West 122nd Street (between Lenox and Seventh Avenue), New York, NY 10027. A/C/B/D or 2/3 to 125 Street. RSVP and info: amie@healthylunches.org.
