PETA Hooks Self

I have new respect for hippies.

I have new respect for hippies.

At least once a week, PETA cranks out pictures of their protesters wrapped in clingwrap, parading naked, locked in cages, dressed as animals, and various combinations thereof. I’ve become pretty inured to this stuff, but I’m sure it does its job of drawing attention from the general public. Now they’ve bumped it to the next level and it’s pretty impressive.

In San Diego yesterday, a bunch of PETAneers demonstrated the savagery of line-fishing by sticking massive hooks through their flesh and dangling from a scaffold. I’m not sure any of them actually got hoisted by hook, and they still weren’t able to resist the bodypaint and faux fish scales, but still. Yuck, ouch, wow, etc.

While I know these people’s hearts are in the right place, I’m not sure if they’re going about it correctly. I’m just as angry and disgusted as the next guy when it comes to cruelty to animals, but doing these zaney things is just going to make the omni world think us vegan are effin crazy! Not to mention, flipping over hot dog stands and throwing paint on people is not going to get their attention in a positive way.

Instead, we should educate (in a civilized, respectful way) and make delicious vegan food! That’s my opinion, anyhow.

Though, I must admit, watching these PETA fanatics is fascinating!

I agree. I’m a “live and let live” type of vegan who gets a hard time when I “come out” to an omnivore about my diet. I think that fanatical organizations like PETA make it hard for the rest of us (respectful) veggies just trying to walk the earth.
