Presenting Brian K. Vaughan
Brian K. Vaughan, author of the science fiction series “Y:The Last Man” is soon to release a graphic novel entitled “Pride of Baghdad.” The graphic novel, illustrated by Niko Henrichon, is intended to portray the war in Iraq through the eyes of a pride of lions who, following an American bombing raid, escape from the zoo.
Regarding his decision to use animals as the characters of his graphic novel Vaughan says, “It’s very difficult to empathize with foreign casualties of war. It’s always difficult to connect with ‘the other.’ Animals have a way of bridging that gap. I think we were looking to exploit that vulnerability to a certain extent,” he added. “Animals don’t have a race or creed, so we have a connection with them that we can’t have with that ‘other.’”
