RIP Juliet, NYC Carriage Horse

The New York Times reports on the death of Juliet, a Central Park carriage horse. It mostly reads as a tragic tale of a screwed up situation; Juliet’s “owner” seems to have done his best for her, given his circumstances.

This would be a good moment to check out the Coalition to Ban Horse-Drawn Carriages, and perhaps sign their petition to ban the carriage horse industry in New York City.

It will be a great day when this cruel relic of tourist amusement is gone for good.

One surprising fact from the Times article: the cash value of a carriage horse is only $1,700. Maybe we can just buy them all up and put the industry out of business.

If Juliet had lived long enough to retire, she could have been rescued by Pets Alive, an animal rescue in upstate New York that in 1998 purchased land that enabled them to take in retired New York City carriage horses.

I signed the petition, though; I see these animals in summer and winter, and it’s no life for a horse.

You people have no idea what you’re talking about. I have worked with the horse drawn carriages for 8 years now in downtown Chicago. I know that you think it’s “easy” and maybe you should buy up all those “poor horsies that have to work long and hard all day long”. Realize that horses sleep standing up, they relax standing up, they live their lives STANDING and their “long hard days” is 80% waiting. To keep a horse for a month costs anywhere between $700-1200 A MONTH! I know- I have two. They both work downtown. They are both my pets, I love them dearly, but they work to pay my bills, and they work because THAT’S WHAT THEY LIKE TO DO. This is what they’ve been bred to do for the last 4,000 years. Get off your lazy preaching asses, and talk to someone instead of seeing a photo or reading some article and invoking that feeling of pity. These aren’t animals you need to pity! ASK! DON’T ASSUME.
feel free to email me and ask me, or complain, or yell. But I want you to KNOW MORE and I want to address your complaints and answer your questions.
    thank you,
