Rudyfood Vegan Zine: Check it out!

Astoria’s Brownbird Rudy Relic describes himself as “a vegan-strait-edge Chicano blues musician.” He is also the creator and editor of the awesome new vegan food fanzine Rudyfood Vegan Zine: Random Vegan Recipes for Random Vegans. The pocket-sized zine features a collection of recipes and random food facts by Rudy and his friends. The recipes are informed by a DIY-ethic and presented in a great cut-n-paste, zeroxed format that warms the little piece of my heart that remembers my own days as a zinester.

Check out Rudy’s recipe for corn dogs; fit for “The Fake Meat Vegan”:

  • 8 Vegan Hot Dogs
  • 6 Skewers or Popsicle sticks
  • one-half cup yellow cornmeal
  • one-half cups flour
  • 1 tsp dry mustard
  • one-half tsp sea salt
  • one-half tsp fine ground black pepper
  • 1 egg substitute (Ener-G works well)
  • 2 TBS Vegan sugar
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1 tsp melted soy margarine
  • Canola oil for deep frying
  1. Combine dry ingredients and mix well.
  2. Add soymilk, egg substitute & margarine—mix well.
  3. Place hot dogs on skewers and dip in the batter layering them evenly.
  4. Deep fry in hot oil—2-3 minutes or until golden brown.
  5. Drain excess oil from corn dogs with a paper towel.
  6. Serve with condiments of your choice.
  7. Eat!
