The Federal Trade Commission is ending the USDA’s milk-makes-you-lose-weight ad campaign after discovering that–gasp!–there’s no evidence to support the claim. The Physician’s Committee for Responsible Medicine has been all over this since ’05, petitioning the FTC to stop the ads, which were part of a federally-funded checkoff program. The FTC sent a letter (.pdf) to the Committee on May 3 alerting them to the change. Hopefully this is not just a fluke but a step toward curtailing other checkoff ad campaigns for animal products.
