The New York Times backpedaled when Wikipedia fact-checkers called them out on their “You Are Also What You Drink” article’s claim that soy milk was not a good substitute for cow’s milk. The Times piece didn’t cite a source for the claim, but the Wiki reference desk tracked the fact back to a 1971 study, and then found tons of refuting research done in the last, uh, 36 years. A Wiki checker sent a letter to the Times, prompting the paper to immediately change the end of the article to: “Fortified soy milk is a good alternative for individuals who prefer not to consume cow milk.” They didn’t append a correction until three days later–after the story showed up on BoingBoing.
