For the most part cooking challenge shows are meat-laden exercises in lardy decadence; a place where butter and bacon are utilized with aplomb. I’d be lying sack-of-seitan if I said I was offended by them – actually, I can’t get enough of them.
But with that said, I often wonder: where do vegans fit into this whole cooking challenge thing? Sure, Zoey Deschanel might pop up and challenge a bunch of Top Chef Masters to a vegan throwdown but that’s far from what I was thinking.
Enter Veggie Conquest. A monthly amateur NYC vegan cooking competition. While it technically isn’t a cooking challenge show, it is something for us vegans to call our own. It’s basically our version of the Iron Chef (albeit without all the staged outcomes).
Word is that they’re all sold out of taster tickets for the inaugural event (taking place this Saturday, August 22nd) but that shouldn’t keep you from supporting such a cool happening in the coming months. (um, they do have one chef ticket left!)
The next challenge takes place September 26th.
UPDATE: The blog Healthy. Happy. Life. has full coverage of Saturday’s event. Check it out!
