No! Don’t close!
We’re sad to hear that the Whole Earth Bakery & Kitchen is the latest local spot to fall victim to gentrification. According to the New York Observer:
“The landlord has refused to renew my lease,” said owner Peter Silvestri. “We’ve been here since 1991. The neighborhood has changed significantly over time.”Now, according to Mr. Silvestri, the bakery is being forced to close on May 31, as his ten-year lease expires. But the owner has not given up yet.
“We have a petition that people are signing,” he said. “We have close to 1,000 names.”
For years, Whole Earth has been a local standby for vegan baked goods. We’re especially fond of their yummy pizza. Here’s hoping that petition makes a difference.
