Winston: A near-death experience
One of my distinct pleasures is reading the essays of Jon Katz on Slate. Jon has a farm where he looks after chickens and donkeys. He’s also written about falling in love with cats.
The writing is honest and straightforward, and it’s a pleasure to read. It’s also a pleasure to read about someone who has no problem with caring about animals, and doing the difficult work of looking after them; who also doesn’t give them up for dead.
By the way, those who are interested in other beautifully written reflections on looking after chickens (or roosters) may be interested in reading the first and joint third place winners in the Lantern Books Essay Contest. Those who want to know more about our feathered friends should visit the websites of Eastern Shore Animal Sanctuary and United Poultry Concerns.
