The other day, I was talking with my husband (an omnivore) about veganism, and it occurred to me that you *could* make the argument that a logical extension of the ethical vegan philosophy is the desire to "eradicate" all carnivorous species from the planet.
Now, I know there's a million reasons that it wouldn't work and shouldn't be considered (eco system balance, the desire to preserve the diversity of life, the fact that a majority would never agree to it, etc.) - but on one level it does make philosophical sense. IE: for each carnivore that lives, how many other lives are lost feeding it? (Cats, for instance?) If you want to look at straight numbers, wouldn't it make sense to just get rid of all the carnivores?
Okay, it's ONLY a philosophical musing, but I wanted to run it by other vegans, and see what their honest thoughts were...!

I simply can't agree. Becoming a carnivore was a response to a food scarcity situation most likely, and to eradicate what must have been a biological adaptation would seem needlessly cruel.
You eradicate them now, then wait another several million years and they'll be back, we'll just have carnivorous rabbit offspring. |
