  • revision on previous experiences. i found something i like here! in the past i've tried the zen, roasted veggie, and some other one (?) and disliked their flavor or lack thereof, use of frozen veggies, staleness but today i really needed something fast and tried the hemp slice (i think it is called canja) and it was really really good.

  • The food: Yep, they are absolutely using Daiya and it is incredible to be able to go into a pizza joint & order a plain cheese slice! Hopefully they'll start adding the Daiya to their other veggie pies...and maybe even offer Daiya sicilian by the slice! Note, they are super generous with the Daiya; you couldn't ask for a cheesier slice.

The atmosphere: Your typical, sticky, pizza joint, but minus any friendliness.

The service: leaves a lot to be desired.

  • Miso herbed tofu as cheese replacement=genius. The veggie combinations on their pizzas should suit most diners' preferences. Spelt crust is easy on the tummy. The prices are high for pizza but totally reasonable for the quality and size of the slices. Only problem is the atmosphere; the place is cramped and feels a little dirty.

  • Just a heads up... went here last night and they are now using Daiya cheese on their pies.

  • My favorite place for pizza in NYC. They have some very unique slices. I've tried most of them and my top two are the green pizza, piled high with green veggies, and the zen pizza. They use shredded tofu on a few of their combinations, which makes for a very filling meal. They even have spelt crust available. Their prices are decent and the slices are huge. There's not much seating, but the pizza is very unique and worth the trip.

  • I truely hate this place. The pizza is gross, the toppings frozen barely re heated veggies, and don't ask for teese - the last time I tried they took a chunk of it and threw it on top and didn't let it melt - not ok.

  • This place was my first stop on a small vegan excursion to the city just last week (Thurs 5/28)..I loved it! I got 2 slices, which were HUGE, and devoured them both. A little pricey ($4-$6/slice) but totally worth it, considering the high quality ingredients and size of the slices. Ordering can feel rushed & awkward the first time, you just kind of scream out your order & they throw the slice in the oven for a few minutes, you pay & then stand around waiting to hear your order get called out.

I got the vegan picante (a very hearty combination of soy meatball, onions, peppers & red sauce on whole wheat crust) & Magic Mushroom (a bunch of different 'shrooms, hemp oil, hemp seeds, hemp basil pesto on spelt crust). Both were amazing, though near the end of the MM slice I had to knock off toppings & just eat the pesto & crust..it got to be a little too rich. So good I went back the next night for another slice of the picante....highly recommended!

  • This pizza has TONS of topping and is very filling and delicious. They have pasta dishes which are vegan and delicious as well. There is desserts too! I have vegan pumpkin cheesecake!! I would definitely recommend but it is a little pricey and a small store.

  • LOVE viva! The service isn't that great but all that matter is the food! The slices are HUGE! We really aren't about fake cheeses so we got the Zen and the Mushroom pizza. Both excellent. They also have vegan treats, yummy desserts!
  • Review by ariela on April 3, 2008:

  • After reading Dan's post on how they now have Teese cheese, i got a group of friends together & headed to Viva. The Teese definitely does melt!!! almost too much considering when i picked my pizza off the plate half the cheese came off! haha It was good especially with the soy meatball & red pepper toppings, the plain pizza with just Teese wasn't as tasty. I'm sure I'll go back but I still think I like Pizza Plus a lot more though.(Their pizza/vegan cheese just tastes better imo) Not to mention the service yesterday..we got 2 pizza's and when they brought the second pie over they gave us real cheese & didn't even apologize. hmfh. kinda lame. anyways Patrick should be writing a post with photos soon!!

  • this is Dan from Chicago Soydairy. Just wanted everyone to know that they are using our vegan Teese Cheese now on their pizza's. It melts, it tastes good, it blows away anything they were using before. Go buy a slice.

  • I tried 4 vegan pizzas here, the ones without fake cheese (picante, canja) were really good, but the vegan cheese they use doesn't melt, and doesn't really taste good. So the zen was just OK, and the pizzas that were low on toppings were pretty bland. The nonvegans I was with were definitely unimpressed, I wish they would switch to follow your heart!

Ordering took a long time, and the pizza mostly was served to us still kind of cold.
