  • Whole Earth Bakery is amazing! I've been going here for years and it's the only place in the city that I can find vegan, wheat-free and sugar-free baked items. Many places offer vegan treats, but all contain wheat or sugar, others are wheat-free but not vegan or sugar-free. This place does it all! For vegans and those with food allergies, Whole Earth Bakery is a godsend. For those who are used to sugary, egg and dairy-filled pastries and food items, this is not going to be the place for you. Go around the corner to the strip of 1st Avenue by Venieros and the like. They have plenty of the typical fatty, sugary fare. If you're a vegan with a sensitive palate who appreciates clean, organic food, you will not be disappointed by Whole Earth.

  • I'm so pissed I just ate this stuff. The "halva truffle" was inedible and I had to spit it out. Ok fine, that was a risky selection, but I expected the chocolate chip walnut cookie to save the day only to find that I had to spit that one out too! How the hell can they make something that looks so good taste so bad? My friends and I agreed that it was the worst cookie we'd ever had, vegan or nonvegan. I know that this is a seriously old-school, healthy-hippie-vegan place, where everything is whole wheat with natural sweeteners and whatever. I even want to respect them for holding on to that mentality for so long, but let's face it, their food is nasty. No one wants a dessert to taste like that. I hate to say it, but this place should either come into the 21st century or throw in the towel because it gives people the impression that vegan food will be the worst food they've ever eaten.

  • I have had two desserts from this place that were horrible and so-so, respectively the ginger snaps and a chocolate chip cookie that tasted more like corn bread with chocolate chips and couldn't be held without falling apart. I brought the ginger snaps to a party and no one liked them which is not good for my "try-to-turn-my-friends-vegan" movement. I'm going to go back because the people are very nice and i do like how healthy everything is. It's a good place for someone who is veg and enjoys a more wholesome, healthy taste but not a good place to bring omnivores.

  • It's a nice cozy place with a good menu. I was craving a vegan pizza and they had it. I ate the whole wheat pizza with mixed veggies and it was really good and so was the service.

  • The service is exceptional, but the food I had was awful. I got a stick bun, which was so dry, I couldn't even eat it. Everything was very expensive, too, with a small sandwich going for $5, and a single small cupcake being nearly $3. It was very cramped, too. I don't think I will be going back.

  • I have not eaten here in years. From my recollection:

    Sweets are hit or miss.
Savories are delicous (I used to get lunch here on a regular basis when I worked a block away)
People would say the pizza is fantastic-they are right.
My favorites were the savory turnovers and the avacado sandwiches.

  • The chocolate cupcake tasted horrible and tasted like it was weeks old - so bad I had to spit it out. The cornbread and banana nut muffin I got were also dry and old tasting. I was unimpressed by the selection of vegan sweets.

  • Not impressed at all, especially since it has been around so long. I much prefer to support the vegan bakeries of Babycakes, LifeThyme, and goto places that carry VeganTreats stuff from Pennsylvania.

  • I can't say that I didn't like anything I've ever bought at this bakery. I've visited several times and particularly enjoyed the fruit turnovers and oatmeal cookies of all kinds. The pizza is also really great, whether it's the roasted veggie slice or the sicilian with vegan mozzarella on top. The cheese didn't quite melt, which is expected of vegan cheese, but at least it didn't taste like feet. In fact, it was fantastic! I'll continue to buy tasty desserts here whenever I'm in the neighborhood.

  • This place rocks! The ABC (apple, beets & carrot) juice is fresh and made before your eyes but best of all it's the fresh coconuts that they sell. I sipped mine with a smile and after sipping they'll cut the coconut in half so you can scoop out the scrumptious "meat" and devour it. I also recommend the totally VEGAN cheesecakes--especially coconut and blueberry!
    Just straight up DELICIOUS!

  • large selection, here's a few items to try: tofu cup cakes (more like small vegan cheesecakes), turnovers (not greasy but lots of fruit and delicious), chili (and the other soups), rice pudding.

the cookies are kinda strange- they taste a bit like sawdust the first time... but delicious soon after. food is mixed, but worth trying everything you can to find personal favorites.

  • Review by Hannah on July 6, 2006:

  • their cakes aren't so good, but i really like the cookies and brownie type stuff they have, and the people behind the counter are always really friendly and knowledgable. and their late hours make it a really good place to stop after dinner or on your way someplace else.

also, whole earth bakery was in danger of losing their lease recently, and would probably not have been able to reopen because of cost issues, so since this issue is ongoing it's great to give them as much business as possible.
