  • I went to Franchia for the second time in a month and it just gets better and better. The service is as welcoming as can be. The atmosphere is delightful...very elegant and romantic. The food is amazing. One time I went with all sushi and the other time I tried one of their entrees. Both were great. Sometimes they run out of things on the menu but that's typical of places that only serve high quality, fresh food. Highly recommended.

  • We found the Franchia website while searching online for a vegan restaurant while visiting NYC. The three people in our party didn't have much experience with Korean cuisine. We elected to go with the prix fixe dinner, which includes soup or salad, appetizers, entree, kim chi, dessert, and tea. It was all delicious, and reasonably priced. Our waiter was inexperienced, but didn't hesitate to ask another waiter to answer our questions. The courses were served in a timely fashion. We will definitely go back on our next visit to NYC.

  • What an odd location. But serene atmosphere, and delicious, creative food. Sort of Asian fusion. Good for a date, or to take the parents!

  • Franchia's food is so delicious, fresh, and beautifully presented: yummy combo pancakes, duck buns, avo/asparagus salad, spicy noodles, stone bowl rice...

but the service is extremely hit or miss. Your experience at a nice restaurant like Franchia shouldn't be dependent upon whether or not you're lucky enough to get the good, friendly waiter over the one who is so not. I'll stick to Hangawi.

  • I must admit that I have yet (for no good reason really) to dine at Franchia. But the fact that Seamless Web is selling $100 gift certificates for only $40 means I'll be going there very soon. http://www.seamlessweb.com/

  • I absolutely heart this place. Some of my favorites... the spicy "shrimp" and avocado sushi and the crispy tofu skin sushi. I also adore the crispy mushrooms, the porridges and their hot pots. Mmmmmm.... delicious teas and delicious mochi for dessert. And the ambiance is great too. I feel all Zen when I'm in there. I've never been disappointed. Definitely one of my favorite veggie places to go to in NYC. Yum yum yum. I'm hungry now. :)

  • Hrm... where to begin. Well, firstly, I was waiting for a friend for twenty minutes, sitting at a table, and no one brought me water or asked if I wanted to order anything. A little bit too hands off, methinks!

My friend FINALLY arrived and we ordered a couple appetizers: 4 different types of steamed dumplings and tofu skin sushi. The dumplings, while being of different types, all basically tasted the same. Kinda nondescript, with nice dumpling dough and crumbly stuff inside. They were okay. The tofu skin sushi was fine, it basically just tasted like rice with teriyaki sauce on top and a little bit of crunch inside, nothing spectacular.

We then moved on to sweet and sour tofu and some asparagus and avocado rolls. The tofu dish was good, but it was just sort of bland, and it was $17. Yeah, this place is on Park Ave, but come on, it was just a plain fried tofu dish like you would get at any cheap chinese place for $7. The roll was good, really good, but that's just because it's avocado and asparagus, how could you mess that one up? :P

The bill comes, and lo and behold, they have automatically added over 20% gratuity! How helpful! After inquiring, it turns out that they had "set the computer" to add gratuity because they had just provided a bill to a large party. They promptly crossed out the giant tip section on the bill for us, how kind! We provided a smaller tip commensurate with the inattentive and odd service we received.

All in all, I found the place to be pricey (for what it is) and bland, and with bad service to top it off. I'll give it another try, eventually, but I can't see why anyone would rush to come here. It seems like some of the reviews praise it for the tea and dessert selection, so maybe I'll give those a shot!

  • Franchia is right around the corner from where I work, and while it's a bit pricey for every day, I love it on occasion. Right now (Happy Easter!) I'm chowing down at my desk on the soy "chicken" skewers--in the most amazing sauce--scallion pancakes (which can be a little greasy and heavy but are perfect in moderation) and the green tea cake, which is out of this world. I've taken omnivorous coworkers there, and some of them have become addicted to the pad thai and veggie dumplings. Some of my other favorites are the tofu and veggies in brown sauce, veggie "meat" balls, tofu steak and pumpkin porridge. And for a treat, the date paste tea is unbelievably sweet (in a good way)!

  • Review by gaijingirl on March 21, 2008:

  • A decent selection of vegan rolls...more than your average sushi joint. Nicely prepared, they do look alot like the real thing (the shrimp tail was pretty impressive.) Classy ambiance, and it definitely beats the sad little cucumber rolls available for vegans at most other sushi yas.

That said, Franchia is a little on the pricey side (my dumpling and two roll order ran me $20. Though granted, I *do* tend towards cheap.) As for the taste? Good. Not howlingly great - the rice in my rolls lacked the vinegared flavor of my regular joint, Sushi Time...and the kimchi dumplings had very little kick.

Was Franchia worth a visit? Yes. But it's not amazingly great Korean..and given the flavor and value, will not be replacing Sushi Time as my personal stand-by anytime soon. Still, it's good to know it exists.

  • Why have I never been here? I really loved all of the appetizers I tried; dumplings, satay, meatballs and nori rolls. (I didn't order all that, I just stole stuff from everyone.) My sizzling mushroom entree was sizzling and that was cool, but it's the only thing that didn't wow me. Someone else's rice bowl and another person's tofu steak was much yummier. The Frenchia salad was also great, with a kiwi sesame dressing. Definitely a nice surprise and I wish I had gone here sooner.

  • Vegan cheesecake normally makes me want to cry and throw up, but wow--Franchia has really mastered it. Creamy, dense, and flavorful--it's everything a cheesecake should be. Other highly recommended things we tried: Tofu skin sushi roll, sweet corn cilantro pancakes, and citron paste tea. The dumplings were so-so and the atmosphere could be a bit cozier for a tea house, but this is definitely a new favorite for sushi and cheesecake fixes.

  • A little rich for my blood, but a nice special occasion spot - cozy with romantic lighting and whatnot, if you're into that sort of thing. The sushi is tasty, and the 18-piece combo is arguably a pretty good deal. Wish the kimchee were spicier. Staff is helpful, bathrooms, fancy. Request to be seated at the mafioso table.

  • I love Franchia. The food is classy and comforting (like the atmosphere). They offer a great selection of teas, satisfying entrees, and interesting smoothies made with tea. It's also one of the only places for vegans in the area, so its existence makes me very happy.

It's a bit expensive and occasionally you'll end up with something bland, but there are enough tasty options that I'm generally happy here.

And like Livi said, the mochi (bean-filled rice cakes topped with coconut) are awesome.

  • I don't really go here too often because it's out of my price range and I'm not that into the food. However, I love their mocchi. Those cool and dense little bean-filled rice cakes topped with coconut make an out-of-this-world Summer treat! They're $5 and totally worth the trip and the cash.
