  • This place, probably due to the vegan uproar, now offers all their dishes vegan and non-vegan. They use daiya cheese and I am yet to have any problems since it seems they default the meal as vegan for safety's sake.

I've had some really great stuff here and some okay meals, but overall I would suggest it. My partner and I love the tofu wings and I love the southern fried cutlet either as a sandwhich or an entree. I was disappointed to find out their pizza is done on a pita and not (fresh made)pizza dough.

I have typically eaten during times when they weren't busy so the service was great then. Once during a brunch I had to wait a long time for the check because they were full and the waitress was very busy. The atmospere isn't anything special, but the bar area is nice and the music isn't too loud so you can read or have a conversation which i appreciate.

  • That said, I am addicted to McKATE Burger- this is the vegan version of a McDona'ds burger...and it is amazing (I order without cheese and add my own vegan cheese- i.e. Follow your Heart or Rice Cheddar cheese [new vegan version] )

  • I too am annoyed at the cheese dilema- apparantly even the "vegan" foods and cheese have some caseinate:

  • WHAT A DUMP. Why do people still count this as a viable restaurant option? Every time I have been to Kate's Joint I have had to ask to be seated, ask for a waiter, ask for the table to be wiped off (with a FILTHY rag); I will not be back. The food is unimpressive & the bathroom is filthy.

  • I think a lot of the bad stuff that people have said about Kate's is true, but I still think it's a pretty solid place to go from time to time. I know the service can be..bipolar, but for the cheap beer, buffalo wings and basics, it's worth a trip if your in the neighborhood.

  • I have not been here in almost two years. I have been maybe four times. I liked the very "vintage/bar/steakhouse" type interior. The food is hit or miss-I think I had the best luck with the brunch. My nonveg company thought it was really good and loved the veggieburger and visited there a few more times. Service is pretty decent and prompt. I'd stop in again if I were in the area.

  • Kates is one of those places that you're thrilled to eat it after growing up in an area with no vegan options, but in a city with hundreds of other places to choose from, other than the buffalo wings, there isn't a reason to go to Kates. The past few times I've been I've had food that was actually so bad that I didnt eat it. The Reuben was outrageously bad, and the burrito was also very poor. At one point I thought that the cheesecake was good, but there is WAY better vegan cheesecake in New York City. The service is also inconsistent, ranging from the worst ever to okay. The only reason to go to Kates is to get the Tofu Buffalo Wings- you can find much more delicious, healthier versions of everything else at other restaurants.

  • The tofu "eggs" Benedict" was fine, and probably a good value, but certainly nothing special. And real vegan cheese would have been a plus instead of this caseinated stuff. (Yeah, that's right, I just made up the word 'caseinated'. Deal with it.)

  • I loved Kate's joint before last night. Last night I had the worst restaurant experience I've had in New York yet. As a party of four, it took over an hour to get our food. The waitress was rude, and didn't even try to bring out drinks/ appetizers ahead of time. Once the main dishes arrived, the vegan TLT (which I've been ordering for over 5 years) was just awful. Soggy, bland, inedible. When we asked the waitress if there was anything that could be done to make it better, she basically said `no` but she would `tell the kitchen.` Nothing was done. No remedy was offered, and the food stayed on the bill. When we left, the manager followed us out onto the street (?!?), complaining loudly that we had not left a good tip! This was incredible, given that we had left 20 percent - she simply hadn't been careful enough to check the table (where we had left cash) before deciding to stalk us outside! Now, I wish I had given a smaller tip - because the service was just awful. I can forgive a restaurant for an off night on the food, but I can't forgive a spot for treating a regular customer like a piece of dirt! As a loyal customer, I was shocked and hurt and how blatantly rude the staff was. I have spent the last 5 years telling everyone I could just how great Kate's was. But last night was so horrible, and the interactions with the waitress and manager were so unprofessional, that I have permanently crossed Kate's off the list - and would encourage all readers to do the same.

  • I used to love Kate's & would visit it frequently. However, it seems to be getting worse and worse everytime I go. The other day my friend & I were the only customers and the waiter was just standing around chatting with his friend about girls for at least 15-20 minutes before coming over to us. Also, the food isn't as good as it used to be. I used to rave about their mashed potatoes and gravy, however the last few times I've gone, they seem saltier than usual and a lot more watery. I don't know, I just haven't been too impressed. Don't think I'll be going back for quite a while.

  • Kate's is very hit-or-miss. I generally order the same things--the African peanut soup and the Southern fried tofu cutlet--every time I go there. Those dishes are reliable and delicious. The fake steak a poivre is also quite good. Other things I have had there, like the popcorn shrimp and the vegan pizza with tofu ricotta, were lackluster. I can't decide if I think the decor--tacky yellow and orange walls, camp patterns and tattered chairs--are shabby chic or just shabby.

  • Okay, I just don't get it. With the exception of cheap brunch pancakes with sweet'n syrupy peach topping, I haven't had a very good Kate's experience, especially regarding the celebrated Unturkey sandwich (50% bread, 30% overpriced, 100% untasty). I'm annoyed that things like the "Vegan" pizza aren't actually vegan (see Kate's documented soy cheese issues). The place has that popular gross-as-hip aesthetic going on, which just doesn't do it for me, especially when it comes to bathroom facilities.

    Kate's, overrated. That is all.

  • We recently visited Kate's and got unturkey soups, a Ballpark Dawg and the Tasting Plate. The soup was probably the best part of the meal. The Dawg was nothing special but it did come with Kate's mashed potatoes and gravy which is awesome. The tasting plate was great as usual, except the hummus was way peppery.

  • Kate's, for me, is pretty much average in every way: it's neither great nor terrible. And I agree that the unturkey club is great. The most annoying aspect of this place is the hipster-dirty-is-chic aesthetic, which appears to my eyes to be way more ugly than either hipster or chic. This resaurant would never be a destination for me, but if was in the neighborhood, well, maybe ...

  • Review by Laura Leslie on May 26, 2006:

  • Kate's is reliable. It's a good place to hang out with friends--lots of space, relaxed atmosphere, good music ("alternative"), not too expensive, great selection of drinks (including a vegan white russian).

The food is mainly diner style comfort food, but it's generally pretty fresh and well made. The unturkey club is delicious and the buffalo wing appetizer is awesome (spicy and greasy, total satisfying junk food). However, it's not ALL junk food--all the salads I've tried have been fresh and very good. Their desserts are above average, and they offer some fresh juices to counteract all the junk food.

Basically, it's not a place to eat all the time, but when you're craving comfort food, it's good that Kate's exists.

Be careful about what's vegan--it's not marked on the menu, and the cheese is questionable. (I always get different answers as to whether or not the cheese contains casein, so I always avoid it.)

The brunch is definitely worth checking out. Good, unlimited coffee, juice, and a nice filling meal, all for only about $10.

  • I love Kate's for brunch. It's cheap, filling, very tasty, and a great place to dine casually with a bunch of friends. There isn't a damn thing on the brunch menu that I would say they should remove (except maybe the option for eggs, heh heh). However, I pretty much hate everything else on the regular menu except for the amazing UnTurkey Club Sandwich. Oh, I like the beer too.
