  • This restaurant makes me sad and hopeful at the same time. Hopeful that it will improve and sad that it doesn't live up to its potential. I went to brunch today, after reviewing the brunch menu on their web site. When I got there, I noticed that the decor was even more thoughtful and elegant than I had previously thought, particularly up front.
Then I got the menu which was different and less vegan friendly than what i read online. I had three choices: vegetable panini, the veggie burger, and a tofu scramble. Since this is brunch and brunch is something I can't do, I went for the tofu scramble and a strawberry lemonade. The strawberry mint lemonade was pretty foul. It was sweet in a toxic way with no tartness or mintiness. There were no fresh strawberries, no mingling of the sweet berry with the bite of good lemons and freshness of mint. They then brought me a piece of bread which was pretty lame.. your typical italian bread given with a big hunk of butter, which I declined. They then offered some olive oil, which was kind, but it was bitter and not the right kind for dipping bread. Already I thought: 1) drink: didn't seem to be made from fresh fruit, in fact, the strawberry in it was a pink syrpy thing; $4 was a lot to pay for something that I could have poured into a glass from a bottle at home 2) boring bread made from white flour showed lack of an imagination 3)what's up with bringing out butter as a spread at a vegan friendly place...

Ok, on to my scramble. It was not the same scramble I read about on the web. In fact, it was unusual... it was a big ol' plate of cubed potatoes, tofu, small black beans, and vegan bacon, and it was oily and spicy and had one basic flavor. It also left me a hot spicy taste in my mouth, which is not a good sign. It was pretty boring, and I was starving... I would have preferred less scramble and some salad to balance it out. It would have also helped the scramble itself to have some vegetables for more color and taste. How about some tomatoes, some peppers, something? On a positive note, it was pretty cheap and the service was much improved from my last visit.

The restaurant is gorgeous. This could be a "spot" even in this economy, if the owners became more vegan friendly and got more creative in the kitchen and at the bar. Right now, though, it's no different than the bulk of other downtown restaurants that have one or two things for vegans.

I will be back and will try other things, hoping that this place will get better.

  • Great space. Mediocre food at best. I've eaten here twice - once with a party of 6, second time with a party of 30. Both times I was very underwhelmed by the food and the service. No one I spoke with from the party of 30 thought it was worth going back. I hope they improve their menu (especially the vegan items) and the execution thereof and train their waitstaff; otherwise I predict this place won't last 12 more months.

  • very good food, right up there next to the likes of candle 79 for being able to do highly gourmet food without animal ingredients. purists won't like that they also serve animals. the place isn't fully vegan. which is nice when you want to eat out with non vegan friends / date, not feel like they are "sacrificing for you", and have a ton of vegan options at the same time! oh also, the place has a cool vibe, gorgeous decor/design and very very friendly staff. however, when it gets too busy they can be slightly sloppy.. but nothing catastrophic that the good food won't make you forgive:)
