  • Love, love, LOVE this place. If it was closer to the subway I would be 500 pounds. I agree with lucifly; this is a great place to bring carnivores to show them that vegan food can be fan f-ing tastic. I feel they're also very affordable for the amount of food you get. I ordered a banana sundae with whipped cream, sprinkles... YUM. I never have trouble finishing anything, but this took me a while. Service was great, I just wish they had more seats; when it's 90 degrees, you don't really want to carry a huge sundae down the street. I was able to get a stool but felt bad for the groups that came in behind me. Definitely recommend!

  • My FAVORITE icecream place! (even over non-vegan places) Thanks to my vegan fiancee, i've been introduced to the amazingness of Lulas... I get their malts exclusively. My only wish was that the place was bigger, as it can get packed... (well its almost always packed when i stop by) and i wish i could sit down and eat instead of getting it to-go all the time!

  • Divine!!!
I've only brought non-vegan friends and they loved it! Even my super dairy loving boyfriend!
Everyone said the cake batter soft serve is the best, I disagree. I had it the first time I went and thought it was ok. I went the next day and had peanut butter and jelly as well as something else, the name escapes me, and they were much much tastier and had a better consistency!
    I'll be back for more!
I just wish the place was bigger so I could bring big groups of people and have my birthday party there!
Also I don't think they play music and they should!

  • Without ever liking non-dairy ice cream myself, I fell into what I will call, íThe Lula's Hole'. One word, amazing!! After going in a few times, and talking to the over friendly staff, I learned all the ice cream is made in-house with what appears to be love. (Really, you can taste the love in the product). On any giving day, they have about ten different hard ice cream flavors and two soft serves. I very much appreciate them listing what is soy, and what is nut based. From what I could tell they go the extra mile to make sure all details are clear, understandable, and presentable. The shop itself is very cozy, with a classic ice cream parlor feel. They also sell non-dairy sweets, pints of ice cream to go, and gift cards. I would very highly recommend Lula's for anyone who wants to treat themselves to high quality ice cream that's very moderately priced and something just a little different.

  • This place is the SHIT. Cookies and cream and mint chocolate chip flavors met my every hopeful expectation -- lovely creaminess, lots of cookies and chocolate chips, no icky soy or cashew aftertaste. Way better than the Carvel and Friendly's experiences I enjoyed in the day. Everyone who works at Lula's is DARLING. Must admit, my first and only other experience there wasn't as outstanding in the ice cream department, but tonight's ice cream was so good I can only believe my senses weren't with me last time.

On a side note, it's also really awesome that they don't appear to use plastic. All sampling spoons, in-house service cups and and even straws are glass or aluminum. Awesome!

Even the dairy eating friends I brought agreed it was some of the best ice cream they'd had! I hope that they are eventually able to expand so that there can be more table seating, but otherwise, a perfect vegan ice cream experience!

  • Review by SLamb85 on September 9, 2009:

  • The ice cream here came in a nice selection of flavors and had a quality that is slightly above most widely available vegan Ice Creams. The toppings were good and I commend Lula's for choosing more natural ingredients but still not tasting like health food. I was also VERY impressed that they were using so many non-disposable utensils/dishes and recycled napkins (Seventh Generation). The portion size, at least for a banana split, was somewhere between satisfactory and good. The staff was very generous in allowing us to sample flavors and mix-match toppings - their chief concern seems to be making sure the customer is happy. Considering the aforementioned qualities, I would say this place is very reasonably priced.

The only thing I found lacking was the atmosphere. While I was there, there were many boxes/supplies around, giving it a cluttered look. The seating area was small and a little difficult to sit/eat at, also the floor was cluttered with pieces of scrapwood. The lighting was a little bright and uncomfortable. The atmosphere was somewhat redeemed by the cool old fashioned decorations and the absolutely wonderful attitudes of the people behind the counter.

  • Stogo is yummy, y'all--but Lula's is out of this world.

Food - Cake batter soft serve? Hot fudge sundaes? Egg-and-cream-free egg creams? Amazing.

Atmosphere - Old timey and adorable. Love the dishes!

Service - If I could rate them a 6 out of 5 for service I absolutely would! We were floated $5 once when we'd arrived without sufficient cash for this cash-only establishment--so if the deliciousness of the food weren't enough, their kindness would absolutely guarantee that we'd be repeat customers (and yes, we were back within the week to pay them back...and eat more ice cream!). I'm also totally indecisive when it comes to all-vegan establishments (too many choices!), and they've always been kind enough to help me reach a decision. Super nice people, super nice place.

Seriously, if I lived in the neighborhood I'd be there every day. God help me.

  • Another notable plus- Lula's Apothecary uses biodegradable spoons (I kept thinking I'm wasting plasting after trying their delicious samples, then looked at the spoon and rejoiced) and ecofriendly containers. I also love that they have a water jug with glasses on the counter- sometimes I just can't enjoy my ice cream if I'm thirsty, and being able to enjoy some H20 w/out even having to ask was great.

I went there for the first time today and love it. While Stogo's has nice stuff, I like Lula's because of the relaxed and cozy feel (as user below mentioned), very decent prices and the variety of choices which include nut-based. The awesome owner let me "try several" flavors; My dream is- nut (or rice)-based soft serve vanilla ice cream mmm

Tonight I had a monster sundae that was impeccably prepared with a mixture of the following soy & nut milk based flavors: Peanut Butter Chip, S'mores, Cookies n Cream, Coffee, Maple Nut, and Cinnamon (my new favorite flavor behind PB chip); it was FANTASTIC. I highly recommend trying a flavor assortment sundae to truly appreciate the artisan ice creams they are producing with gusto & serving up with style.

The owners couldn't be nicer or friendlier and it lends itself to a crowd full of pleasant people and smiling tummies.

  • Just wanted to add that they make their own soft serve now (rather than using Chicago Soy Dairy), which means more flavor options, and also a nut-based soft-serve in addition to soy. I thought their version was better than Chicago's. They're also making their own whipped cream now rather than using Soyatoo. One commenter thought it fell apart too quickly but I thought it was great. I just really like their do-it-yourself, homemade mentality. It makes it more legit and keeps things local, less-processed, and with less wasteful packaging. Rock on Lulas!

  • This is a great place, friendly, welcoming, and I love the owner and her service. I'd happily recommend it to any vegan to give a try.

That said, I personally think the ice cream is not that good. Today I had a sundae. The coconut whipped cream had no creaminess...it just fell apart instantly. The caramel sauce had little/no flavor. The nut-based ice creams (I had the mint chocolate cookie and the chocolate) also just had little flavor and I tasted the nut base more than whatever they were meant to taste like.

I did have a taste of the cake batter soft serve...mmm. And again, I am not trying to knock this place or say "don't go there"--you totally should! The prices are reasonable, it's fun and warm and nice just to be there, and you might just love the food. I guess in my head I'm comparing it to Maggie Mudd's in Bernal Heights, SF and while the atmosphere and service are superior...Maggie Mudd's knocks my socks off with, well, food that is just plain better. YMMV.

  • Lula's hardly needs more positive reviews, but I'm going to give one anyway. The proprietor was friendly, helpful, and the ice cream flavors and textures are VERY well done. The atmosphere is particularly good - in a city filled with faux diners, pseudo-50's burger joints (Johnny Rockets?), etc., Lula's comes off with a genuine ice cream parlor feel. Far better than Penny Licks in W'burg, for sure.

  • I would like to express my sincere gratitude to the founder's of Lula's for their wonderful vegan ice creams. Their deserts, which are made entirely in-store (I asked), are so much more than ice cream substitutes. They are made with care and imagination, and their unique and delicious flavor combinations have raised the bar not just for vegan ice-cream, but for ice cream in general. Additionally, the owners, a husband and wife team who make and serve the ice cream themselves, are very warm and always ready with a sample of their latest creation for you to try. The decor is a wonderful study in contrasts - old Woody Guthrie and Johnny Cash songs playing through an iPod. An old world-style ice cream shop, complete with anachronistic black stools and turn of the century posters, which serves a completely vegan menu (did that word even exist at the turn of the 19th century?) If I were to recommend anything, I'd recommend their hot chocolate, only because it might be overlooked. This isn't your average soy milk and cocoa powdered HC. My only warning is that after trying this one, hot chocolate you get anywhere else will simply not taste as good!

  • A unique and special establishment. Imagine the soda shops of the 50's (think Back to the Future), but without any animal products. What the kind and dedicated shop owners, Blythe & Derek, prove with their genius is that it is actually possible to create a vegan product more delicious then you could ever find at Baskin Robins and Dairy Queen (and I used to LOVE DQ). I suppose I always suspected it might be possible... but it took D&B to prove it! Try the hot coco and my personal favorite: lemon ginger ice cream with whipped cream and pineapple sauce... but don't deprive yourself of ordering the three-flavor banana split if your really hungry. After all, there are too many great flavors to restrict yourself to just one!

  • Took my Brooklyn born & bred parents to this updated vegan (and ferociously clean) version of the ice cream shoppes they grew up with. We had a grand time sitting on stools at the counter enjoying hard to believe sundaes, shakes, and cones served regally in various glass parfait dishes accompanied by tiny silverware shovels and metal straws. Lula's was intended to be a kitschy destination on our day trip in from NJ and instead turned out to be a flat-out glamourous ice cream event, completed incomparably by the gracious and charming owner who made us feel like friends. May Lula's be prosperous and long-lived; thank you for a wonderful afternoon.

Full disclosure: they seemed to be out of a few toppings, some of the ice cream flavors were running low, and the hot fudge wasn't hot.

The taste and the texture of the ice cream are far superior. And the place itself is just way cooler. But feel free to see for yourself. Lula's is all I need. Lula's also has great brownies by my favorite vegan bakery -- Gone Pie. A brownie sundae at Lula's is worth trying. But even without the brownie, their ice cream will make you happy. So many flavors and toppings. Can't beat this place for satisfying your sweet tooth. And the staff are super friendly. They let you taste and taste until you make your choice. • An absolute joy. This place makes you glad to be a vegan in NYC. The ice cream is truly delicious, much better than any other vegan ice cream I've tried. There's a good amount of variety in ice cream flavors and a lot of toppings/sauces are available too. The brownies are good as well.

In style and decor, Lula's is a throwback to the old soda parlors that were dying out as I was a little boy. It's lovely and homey inside. My only minor quibble is that the store makes Das Boot seem spacious.

The proprietors are very nice and friendly.

  • Review by absentreferent on November 11, 2008:

  • I recently strayed from my home in the land of vegan privilege, Portland, OR, and found myself at Lula's drinking a mint chocolate chip milkshake with house made ice cream. I then found myself there again. And again. And once more for good measure. My intent was to quickly go in and grab a milkshake, say "neat place" and enjoy said milkshake on my walk back to the L. I ended up spending about 15 hours over a short week getting to know the two who own Lula's, dream up and create the ice cream, scoop said ice cream and quite possibly even sleep behind the ice cream cooler.
The point is that this is a business owned by people who care. They have a childish sense of adventure and joy tempered by a sense of responsibility and vision. This is who I want to make up my ice cream. It's also very clear that they feel they are a part of the neighborhood, and the neighbors feel the same. Also, Cinnamon ginger peach. Phenomenal. I know, right?
Every time I was there they had a whole bunch of flavors made right there in house, and they make the ice cream with excellent ingredients. With all the toppings and different ways to prepare ice cream (floats, shakes, sundaes, etc.) it's hard to imagine settling on a favorite combination. They also have chicago soy dairy soft serve! The chocolate is wonderful.
At first glance the prices seem a bit high, but the portions are great and the product is high quality. Well worth the price (and I don't spend money on much).
Just go in and let yourself be a little kid. Talk with the owners (workers) and see why this is a business worth supporting. And try any of the ice cream with cinnamon. Damn so good.

  • Lula's makes me want to eat ice cream all winter.

The only things they should do are: cover the entire cone of soft serve with sprinkles - a couple of spoonfuls just doesn't cut it. Roll the whole thing in a big tray of sprinkles to get it perfect.

Also, in true ice cream parlour fashion I think the place should be really bright and cheery. Save the atmospheric lighting for some swanky bar... ice cream parlours need bright lights!

Besides these tiny criticisms, this place is awesome... it's great how they let you sample flavors, all the samples I tried were delicious and wow, I wish I was there now double fisting a banana split with some soft serve. Veganism really is the best thanks to places like this.

  • After reading the blog entry about this ice cream parlor, I couldn't help but run over ASAP and try them out, and I wasn't disappointed! Three non-vegan friends and I visited after school and when we arrived the staff were super nice and very helpful. I ate a cup of chocolate-peanut butter ice cream and sampled a bit of the hot fudge sundae and orange creamsicle ice cream my friends were having, and all of it was excellent. Although the space is small, they've managed to fit a decent amount of seats inside without completely blocking the passage to the cash register, but this is NYC, what can really be done about space? I was satisfied, my friends were satisfied, and I'll definitely be visiting again.

  • Finally, a place in Manhattan that serves good-tasting vegan soft serve (yes, this precludes Atlas)! When I visited, they were out of most of the flavors of the in-house ice creams (another novelty--Temptation and Klein's used to be the only options) but I sampled the soy-based chocolate and was told they will also have nut-based varieties (more great news; I can't think of any not-raw place that offers non-soy-based vegan frozen desserts in the city). They have a pretty extensive menu of sundaes, splits and other ice cream desserts and a good selection of toppings too, from standard sprinkles to crumbs of every flavor of Newman O's. The decor is pretty minimal right now but they've managed to fit a fair amount of seating into a small space. Any quibbles I'd have about this place are minor, though; NYC desperately needed something like this.
