  • Had a delicious dinner with old friends, and we'll definitely go again. Had the sesame chicken with broccoli. It was very flavorful and fresh tasting. The pistachio ice cream was a delightful dessert to top off the meal. Atmosphere was clean and airy. Service was the best! Friendly staff. A big 5 star from our party!

  • Not sure why this place is so highly reviewed... Sushi was good, but the special rolls didn't do this big ol' girl's waistline any favors. All fried and veganaise-y. Good though. Didn't try any fake fish rolls, the idea of fake fish sounds kind of vomtastic to me, and I'm not into giving New York style tacos. Now for my huge pet peeve: why would a sushi restaurant have such a bizarre unfocused menu? Just stick to making good sushi; seriously, thai food AND a "chicken" parm hero? What in the Lord's gracious baby's name??!

  • DELICIOUS. We went for the sushi and it did not disappoint. There are veg rolls, and then there are Soy & Sake veg rolls: terrific.

Everything was fresh, fairly priced & nicely portioned. We didn't order anything without exclaiming that we'd have to have it again. This will be hard since we also spied a lot of deliciousness going on at other tables (pad thai, I'm talking to you).

The drinks were great, the restaurant is clean & bright, and the service is super-efficient.

minus 1 atmosphere star for the fish tank :-(

  • This is just the same old fake meat slathered in salty/sugary sauces that you get at Red Bamboo, Wild Ginger, and VP. The twist is the emphasis on Japanese cuisine, particularly the sushi made with fake raw meat, which is fun as a novelty but not particularly good as a food.

  • they have by far the tastiest fake chicken i have ever had. the mango chicken salad is amazing and pretty reasonably priced. the food here is soooo much better than vegetarians paradise and probably red bamboo also. just thinking about that salad is making me hungry!

  • Went on Friday and was impressed. I love the collard rolls from red bamboo, so was very pleased that I could have them at S&S. The buffalo wings were good, too. I had the citrus beef, which was a little bit chewy, but tasty. My partner had the avocado boat and loved it. We shared a piece of the oreo cheesecake for dessert (we took it home because we were stuffed!), which was good, though not the best vegan cheesecake I've had. The martinis are very reasonably priced and the portions are generous.

I'll definitely go back. There's lots to try. I definitely recommend this place, particularly to fans of Red Bamboo/VP2.

  • A lovely restaurant with something for everyone. The non-vegetarians who came with us were blown away by the food as well.
I highly recommend the Thai Coconut Soup the Vegan California Rolls and Philadelphia Rolls.

Note: I am not a fan of their fish tank.

  • I tried it yesterday for the first time, and this is a thumbs up. I do wish I could find some "fake" sushi that has "fish" even closer to the texture and taste of raw fish (sorry whoever may be turned off)- i.e. a smooth texture for salmon and tuna (message me if you wanna go on this endeavor! really). the Philadelphia roll had vegan cheese (thin slices, but still quit good, though do wish it was actual vegan cream-cheese-i.e. Tofutti. I am being particlar here as a former authentic sushi lover)
The crunchy roll was yummy, and the spicy tuna roll definitely tastes good (it is more of a pieces of "cooked" tuna texture rather than gel-like pieces). I recommend getting spicy mayo sauce (wish it tasted more like the ones in real tuna rolls, but still works well) on the side for the crunchy rolls. They gave me water while I waited and I enjoyed the PETA "Animal Times", etc. reads available. They are offering a 4.99 Saigon sandwhich (havent tried as yet) there that they seem to be passionate about promoting.

  • so good! warning: the bento box is huge so really think twice before ordering appetizers or anything. you get a choice of curry, teriaki, or ? I can't remember the third and you can pick which type of 'meat' you want - I have tried the salmon and two kinds of chicken - all were great though one of the chickens (can't remember which one!) was amazing.

  • I am a huge fan of sushi, and the fact that they have a VEGAN Philadelphia roll (????!!!!) made me so happy.
Me and my friend split 4 or 5 different rolls and the waiter brought us an additional special roll and each one was AWESOME!
We tried out a few that sounded weird on the menu but needed to be tried to figure it out, and I am glad that we did.
Everything was reasonably priced and the setting was pretty cool, too. It was really a nice place for a date.
Our waiter was a really funny dude, too! He was super attentive and made us both laugh! :)
I will be back Very sooon!!!

  • Review by BankBank on February 9, 2009:

  • Tried S&S back in December, ordered the Tofu Teriyaki bento. Totally unimpressive. The teriyaki sauce was very inauthentic (read: non-Japanese-tasting) and the Tofu was flavorless with a very thin, boring coating.

Fast forward to the future and I decided to try some of the sushi rolls. Scrumptious! Yeah, it's pretty hard to make a bad avocado cucumber roll, and I guess the tempura veggie roll wasn't out-of-this-world or anything, but surprisingly enough the "Spicy Tuna" roll was the highlight! I sort of just ordered it as an experiment, but was pleasantly surprised. The 3 rolls was more than enough to fill me up.

In summary, I'd say the menu is hit-or-miss, but a neat concept and fairly priced for the West Village location.

  • Visited December 26, very much impressed
The food was excellent and the sake good. I had the pork chops and greens. I have not eaten pork or red meat in at least 20 years and I do not miss them at all. How tasty and what fun to eat these "chops". I will be back to try more soy dishes. The wsit staff was lovely, the atmosphere was lovely and the fish tank cool.
Just one note... I have never had sake in a wine glass, but other than that 5 stars to you!!!

  • Really, really good and a great value for the money. The #12 bento box is more food than I could eat with having an appetizer before hand. They also gave us the most amazing strawberry soy pudding for dessert. If it is not on their menu as a regular thing it better get on there.
Didn't rate the food as a 5 because it is good but a bit Red Bambooish, but based on price per value it is a 5+

  • Got some take out from here. We received EXCELLENT service. They gave us recommendations on what to order and tea while we were waiting. The space is gorgeous, and huge.

    The food:
I now have a permanent craving for the chicken tempura. The lettuce wraps are AWESOME. I also enjoyed the California roll. Not overly fishy at all.

I found the miso soup to be bland, and the gyoza had a weird slimy texture.

I'm excited to try other menu items especially the wide variety of sushi.

  • Review by PlomeekSoup on December 9, 2008:

  • I ate here for the first time this evening, and overall, it was a really good experience.

For apps, we ordered the buffalo wings (five to the order; perfectly prepared/presented) and something called a Soy Crab Tortilla, which I advise you skip. It was a small white corn tortilla smeared with avocado and topped with what looked like shredded soy cheese (this was the soy crab). The whole thing was cold, unimaginative and flavorless.

For mains we ordered the Spider Web roll and the Shrimp Tempura roll. Both came out together on a large, oval glass plate. The Spider Web was five large pieces, which included warm fried "crab", asparagus, avo, etc. and was delicious. The Shrimp Tempura was eight large pieces, all topped with a spicy "tuna" that resembled a walnut pate, but tasted great. The accompanying sauces were dotted along the plate, but next time I think I'll order an extra side of spicy vegan mayo.

Service was stellar and the atmosphere really is pleasant. You have nice people-watching out the window to Seventh Avenue South, while you have a huge fish tank on the other side to stare at and zone out on.

It's nice that the fish tank isn't an ironic accessory that you might otherwise find in a real fish/seafood/sushi restaurant.

  • The food and the service were excellent. Nice space, lots of windows and a huge tropical fish tank. It's the same owners as Red Bamboo and VP2, but they are taking the dining experience up a notch with this one. The menu has a lot of the Red Bamboo favorites (and Vegan Treats desserts!) in addition to some amazing vegan sushi. The spicy tuna and spicy salmon rolls were great. I will definitely be back again soon!

  • My life is complete. A sushi menu I can finally order from without skipping to the avocado and cucumber rolls. "Shrimp", "scallop" and "eel".... and vegan mayo too! Oh my!

The rest of the menu is straight up Red Bamboo/VP2 fare. Delicious nonetheless.

AND they deliver to my house. I am a happy lady.
